I want to build a US Jeep depicting a company HQ vehicle belonging to the 9th US Armd Div 1945, 14th Tk Battalion.

What would be the correct bumper codes?

I know the 9 (triangle) 14 (triangle) but what about the opposite end of the bumper?

According to my reference book, US Armd Div's ETO 1944-45 the companies had one jeep, 2 Shermans and a 105mm Sherman, then of course the 3 platoons of tanks.

Would the bumper code be anything like HQ 1 or would that be more akin to a Battalion HQ Jeep?

Thanks in advance.

As you have it would be a Bn HQ jeep. The Company HQ jeep would have the Company letter on it, such as A 6 for the A Co commander's jeep. I don't know what the # would be though. Do your references say who or what section the jeep belonged to? It was most common for the jeep to be the commander's jeep.

The main reference I have been using is the US Armd Divs ETO 1944-45 book by Steve Zaloga.

One of the tables describes each tank company as having an HQ section comprising a Jeep, (presumably the CO's) together with 2 75/76mm Shermans and 1 105mm Sherman.

It is the Company commanders jeep of A company, 14TK Battalion, 9AD that I am hoping to depict to go along with a Pershing from the same Company.

If it's the vehicle of the Company Commander of A Company, it probably would have been marked as A-1. Most of the units I was in, at the Company level, the Company commander's vehicle was "X"-1 (Including the Headquarters Company), and the Battalion Commander had HQ-6.

I would bet that in a Tank Company, the CO would have had both a jeep and a tank, and probably the 1SG would have been driving around in the jeep and the CO would have had fought from a tank. I would guess that tank might be more likely to sport the number A-6.

But if anybody has photos, those are always better, because even though units had SOPs a lot of times they didn't follow them consistently.

Thanks Tom. Very good info for me to make it look as real as I can. Well for me anyway.

Would he, the Company CO, have had a regular jeep or would it have had additional radios, basket on the back etc?

Most likely, the CO's jeep would be pretty standard. He usually rode in his tank. The jeep would be for running around when not in battle and the 1SG usually rode in it when the CO wasn't using it.

Tom is all over it, to add to his post though. I have also seen the CO's jeep/HMMWV (for modern vehicles) to carry the 66 bumper #. SO it could also be A 66, while his tank would be A 6.
