Don't b e too hard on yourself... The best book I can recommend for anyone ( newbie or old fart, like myself) is Calvin Tans " Modelling Waffen SS figures" from Osprey. Check out Amazon and you might get it for a deal.
The book covers most common styles of camo used by the Waffen SS, pea, oak leak etc. Calvin breaks it down to an easy method, and just to see his painting style is a treat. Hold off, get the book, you'll be much happier, really...

I also recommend Calvin Tan's book, but in the mean time there is a good article over on the Historicus Forum called Painting 3 Types of German WWII Camouflage
It has a pretty good step by step and lots of photos.

To be honest with you the advice that you have received regarding the Osprey book, where Calvin Tan, gives clear instruction and illustration is the way to go. I say this partly because there are a variety of different patterns, each requiring a different approach to colour, which he again explains in great detail and without breaching copyright, it is almost impossible to explain in a few lines. So I would say do you have a local library, or if not, put the figures aside and save up to buy the book, which is not expensive and fabulous value. It is also reviewed on this very site, if you search through the Osprey reviews under the Reviews link above.

Newbie,
I can only agree with what Jamie & John have already said.
I myself paint in enamels & oils, and although Calvin's descriptions refer to acrylics (which seem to be "the thing" these days), I've still found it to be a useful reference.

I paint mostly German figures which make up about 80% SS camo. Since purchacing Calvin Tan's book Modelling Waffen-SS Figures, my camo has improved significantly. Have to strongly agree with the other guys. Your money will be greatly invested in a sure thing.
Jaume Ortiz also has a book on painting Fallschirmjager Figures which includes splinter camo as well as painting flesh tones. Another great investment as well.
Good Luck,
Henry
