Cool pic! Thats a rather tough looking Humvee and a project I wouldnt mind having a go at.

Its an M1116 airforce Humvee, basically an M1114 with a greater cargo capacity-hence the new type of cargo area. The armor shields on these things look pretty cool, it appears the US have been copying the IDF method with these things, the shields are almost identical to those seen on IDF LIC M113's. It would probabaly be possible to coble one of these together using bits from Mouse Armor's IDF 5th gen Gun shields which have those exact vision ports.

It seems that the original idea of the Humvee has been left in the dust. All of the incarnations that have been the result of lessons learned in OIF lead me to believe that rather than trying to make a truck into a tank (which seems to be the direction we're heading), why not look into a more wide-spread application of the vehicles such as the M1117 ASV, or it's earlier cousin, the V-100 series Commando? This latest Humvee must be an absolute beast to drive in a serious manner!

Jim,
Comes down to cost... The M1114 series is in production and continues to fill the need, somewhat, in Iraq. It evolves with the threat and remains capable of serving as the primary mounted patrol vehicle. The M1117 would be a better choice but vehicle cost as well as production time gets people's attention. Even during times of conflicts, the beancounters get their vote.

While I think there will always be a market for the regular humvees back here in the states, you will see a much different humvee from now on. I mean just go back to one16 years ago in the first Gulf war and before that in Panama and how much they've changed. Heck, jut go back to 4 years ago when this war started and we were on the more conventional attack role as opposed to this police type role. The humvee has truely evolved. As have all the equipment we use now in Iraq. Most vehicles look more of Mad Max then out of the Pentagon.
