This is just for my own interest. Many photos of WWII AFVs show the driver, or driver and co-driver, riding with their heads sticking clear of the hatch. I take it the seats have some kind of height adjustment on them so they can be cranked up far enough to allow this?

Yup, you are correct. The driver and co-driver seats would have a vertical adjustment.
The commander's seat likely had an adjustment and most were probably able to flip up to allow the commander to stand on a flat pedestal to look out the hatch...very simplified explanation.

There was another type that had brackets on both sides rather than the single post.

I can't say I think I'd like to drive a Tiger, if you couldn't look out like on the Yank tanks. Still the Germans weren't noted for too many creature comforts, were they?
