I always heard it was a shortened version of "GP" that stands for "general purpose." I also heard that it was named for the Jeep in the Popeye cartoons. I think you will get a bunch of different answers on this one.

Yes it does stand for gp but not general purpose.In fords catalog thingy g stood for military vehicle regardless of year and p stood for 88 inch wheelbase recon car. jeep also comes from the popeye character, (jeep jeep) eugene the jeep

I always was told that the Jeep got his name from the GP thingy.
As far as I know GP stands for "General Purpose" and that it was shortened by the soldiers in WW2 to Jeep. (soldiers always shorten everything)
Same with what happened to the UH 1 helicopter in Vietnam. Everybody knows the good ol`Huey that`s the way how the soldiers used to call her
