Just make sure that the mixture is always tainted tinner, and never thinned paint. there's several types of washes, one of which is called 'pin wash'. this technique is used on the shield i think. it is applied with a small fine pointed brush and only to small details like bolts and seams. use a dark colored mixture to do this, and the paint will crawl around the details making them more visible. it gives an effect as if dirt has crawled around the bolts like you would see in real life too. another type of wash is the 'filter'. you can find enough information on the internet regarding washing. try googling it
