Hi,
I ve recently tried using vallejo paints and encountered some problems........
What medium do you guys use to thin the paint? I ve tried using spirits and water but it doesnt seem to work very well........ Cleaning the airbrush seems to be another headache. I tried using commercial thinner to clean it but it doesnt work!

Just plain water is the recommended thinner for this and works well for cleaning the regular brushes, too. Regular thinner will not work for your airbrush since it it a solvent and is not compatable with an acrylic. While I've never airbrushe Val. paint, I have used POlly S, Polly Scale, Model Master and Tamiya acryllics in the AB and cleaned them by blowing water through the system. Really tough accumulations have been cleaned with either isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol or finger nail polish remover (acetone) applied with a Q-tip or with a pipe cleaner.

What is the specific problem you are encountering? I have been using Tamiya acrylics but have started to use Vallejo acrylics myself. One thing that I noticed is that it is not as viscous as other paints. If it is not going on clean or splotchy, it may be any numerous airbrush issues such as the distance from the object you are airbrushing or maybe the pressure you are using versus what and how you are thinning the paint. Something to think about before you decide it is how you are thinning it.

I also try to use whatever the manufacturer puts out for thinner. In this case, I use the Vallejo Diluyente Thinner #524.

Cleaning-wise, I agree with AJLaFleche, I use warm water with a drop of mild soap and run it through my airbrush followed by another run through of clean plain water. I have the Aztec 470 and haven't had many problems cleaning it.

Hope this helps, GR8Voyager

To thinn the paint just clear water. To clean the airbrush Vallejo has a special airbrush cleaner that works well follwing the instructions.
There are two kind of paints from Vallejo, one for airbrushing (Model Air) and the other one to be applied with a brush (Model Color). Are you using the one for airbrushing ?

Once I used Valleyo the ones with the white cap (not the new ones with black cap made expressely for airbrushing) and thinning them with water was just fine. The problem I encointered was that once dried I gave them a wash with acrylic Tamiya and it ended up in a mess. The Tamiya somehow attacked the underlaying Valleyo which lift up almost everiwhere. So I can reccomend you to seal the Valleyo before giving it a wash with Valleyo tranparent gloss or matt varnish, then you can do whatever you wish.

Water is fine. Vallejo do their own thinner if you want to get it..

To thin my Vallejo paint I use WINDEX blue window cleaner. It works great for all my painting needs including airbrushing.

It actually doesn't matter - The Vallejo AIR paint's are a WASTE OF MONEY if you already have their regular acrylic paints series which can also be used for airbrushing along's their properly thinned with water.

I just don't understand why any anyone would have the regular Vallejo paints and then go out and buy the SAME EXACT color's but from the AIR series ....... It's throwing good money out the window. I have airbrushed the regualr series and have compared them to airbrushing a couple of the exact same colors from the AIR series AND THEIR IS ABSOLUTELY NO DIFFERENCE in the quality finish you get..

I'm just passing this on in hope to save you all some money.

And a word of caution to Basturk ....... if you keep on shooting acrylic paint mixed with thinner's that are for solvent based paints, through your airbrush, your going to cause some problems in the inner workings of that airbrush. Especially if you have a good airbrush. The spring's, valves and O-rings will become so gummed up that your airbrush will give you very poor performance and become totally unreliable & faulty, and you'll probably have to get the airbrushed serviced
