I recently voted on a poll on this site which asked us which area of modelling we preferred. I ticked the modern box, 23% voted as I did. I would imagined this equates to a substantial number of modellers worldwide In the light of recent releases it would seem that the manufacturers do take this kind of information into account.
Could I just ask those companies to consider producing some box set Modern Figures to accompany the Humvees, M1A1, and all the new Stykers currently available?
At the moment it is an exciting time in modelling some of the recent and expected releases from companies like Masterbox leave us Modern builders drooling over the figures currently available for interests other that just WWII German infantry.
Nightly we see on our new programmes US, British, Canadian, former eastern block countries along with Arab states, engaged in Major conflicts through the world and it would be great to have figures other than the very expensive (but very good) resin figures to accompany the Vehicles. I’m not aware of any other box sets other than Dragon & Trumpeter figures.

I second your request. There is definitely a lack of modern figure sets.. especially in more relaxed positions.

Pete, you're forgetting that the sprue was good for stretching into antennae, as well...

But the weapons in those two sets were pretty good, though. I got both sets and that's about all I got out of them.

I was about to say the same thing. I bought one of those sets and looked at it in horror when I opened the box. The torsos were good for converting other figures. Also, the weapons were very nice. But everything else went right in the trash. There are modern figures and some nice ones too, but unfortunately, most of them are resin and pricey. Fortunately, I do lots of resin casting so I generally copy everything good, and put together bits and pieces to make what I want. But I still agree there is a serious lack of modern plastic figures.

Cheers Jim
For letting me know about the figures, I hadn't seen these before.

The Big Marine called camouflage idea looks great. Hope they are better than their last sets of Modern figures as the rest of the guys have noted.

Pat,
Those ICM figures look like a rebox of there old set. The figures are wearing PASGT body armor and although some PASGT was seen around Iraq, 99% of the troops wear IBA's. Other than that, those figures are nice and would work great for anything before OIF/OEF.

As Pete says, they are a reboxing of thier older US Anti-Terror troops. The weapons are not correct for OIF/OEF either. They have M16A1s and an M60 MG. All have been eclipsed by newer weapons with M4s and M16A2, 3, or 4s replacing the M16A1s. The M240B has replaced the M60 as well. Thier ALICE ammo pouches and other gear such as the ALICE LCE suspenders are no longer worn by 99% of the troops either. They best represent troopers from the late '80s to early '90s.

Here are a couple of their older boxings.

I have those Afghan fighters and all I can say is that they're OK. It depends on how good of a figure painter you are. I guess you can say they're a good basis to work with considering their low price. I got them from Hobbyterra.com for $5.95. They're sold by Alanger now, by the way.

Not really in plastic. Dragon has a coupel SAS/SBS sets, but that is about it. Not sure how up to date they are though.

Dragon SBS w/Kayak

SAS Elite Forces

Accurate Armor and Verlindes have a few resin figures/sets too.

About the best US modern figures in plastic are the Dragon Modern Marines set. They can be used as Army troopers as well since the gear and weapons are basically the same.

If you`re a bit lazy but want a good result try cannibalizing the dragon NBC set & apply webbing, weapons & helmets to a very easily modified set of JGSDF figures that are for the Komatsu LAV . Helluva job to paint that Japanese camouflage but now I`m thinking of spoiling them all (except one) to do that conversion. On the MOD web page you`ll find a photo of the new body armour to help with conversion. There are two neat pairs from Verlinden which I did & posted on another site (because it was easier to do ) You will find it in the gallery section there. If you`re interested in brit stuff Ptruhe posted some absolutely stunning ration boxes some time ago, so let me know & I`ll e-mail èm,(can`t promise when `cos I`m not much good at this computer lark. Oh & by the way to convert the Japanese using the Dragon NBC the poses should come out as reasonably relaxed poses with the minimum of effort.

Great paint job, I think the uniform cam pattern is excellent!
