I am looking at doing a LAV-C2 conversion of the new Trumpeter kit, and originally expected to do a scratchbuild conversion. Then I found out about the old Esci LAV command vehicle kit. Could anyone tell me how useful the old Esci Command LAV rear deck section is, and whether it might be suitable for use in a conversion? I'm looking specifically at the raised "box" portion over the crew compartment, including hatches and cupola. I've never seen the Esci kit, and didn't want to spend $$ for a kit on eBay just to find out how bad it was, given its reputation. Thanks!!

Honestly? I think you would be better off waiting for Trumpeter's announced C2 kit. The Esci back end was too shallow and very undetailed. I put the Esci back deck on a Italeri kit a few years ago and while it is ok, it is not that great. If you could get it for $5 or so, it might make for a good place to practice scratchbuilding and conversions, but it will involve a fair amount of work.

Thanks! I hadn't heard that Trumpeter was releasing one, but that's awesome news and your assessment is very helpful. I think I'll take your advice and wait. I plan on building it for a friend who is a 4th LAR vet, and he'll be very pleased that the C2 is getting some respect!

Yup, there are three LAV-25 variants slated for release, though no time-table yet. They are:

The LAV-C2
The LAV-TOW
and the LAV-R Recovery version.

Hope you have something to do while you wait for the kit to come out!
