Can some one point me in the right direction on how to do an effect of shell fire hitting water . I'm about to start a model of the "Graf Spee" and would like to do a wee dio of it being shelled.
Not really sure about how you should go around doing this but... you could email this man called Joseph Neumeyer from Dynamic Diorama's An example of his work... a plane crashing in the sea from this page: http://www.dynamicdioramas.org/wr/wr.html From This site http://www.dynamicdioramas.org/
You could email him asking how he did the water effects. Another example of a Shell hitting water
I hope you will find your answer

Many years ago when mists covered the earth Military modelling mag did an article on this theme one way was to use model glue in a tube.you touch it to your base then squeeze and pull, obviously you would have to hold the base upside down and leave it that way to dry they suggested it for bullet splashes and icicles I tried it once and it worked, for a shell splash I imagine you would have to do it a few times to bulk it out. hope this helps
