Some of the Sherman tank pictures I've seen show no sign of having the mounting strips for the side fenders going over the track tops. In which case, which Shermans had the side strips, and which didn't? It seems these fenders were rarely used in the field anway.

Off the top of my head, some "earlish" Shermans had the sand shield mounts under the sponson. Later, the more commonly seen bolt holed strip was used. I don't know but I think the earliest Shermans didn't have either... again this is just off the top of my head.

Gday Tom. As Roy stated and from the pics I've seen it seems some earlier M4s and M4A1s especially from the Italian campaign showed no signs of the sandshield attachment strips.

Yeah, I think it actually became doctrine later as they interfered with running gear maintenance...
Hope it helps some! What are you building?
Cheers

I'm building an IDF M50, the 1956 version, using Tamiya's M4 as the base. The M4 kit has the unrealistic ridges along the sides, and I'd be happy to just remove the things and leave the sides bare.

Add them for the M50. Shermans converted had gone through a few re-builds by '56. For some reason the sand shields where added only to be removed by the troops in the field .

I recall the same thing from an old thread on Missing Lynx.
