Hello all,

I’m new here and seeking advice/suggestions/recommendation.

I am currently working on Dragon’s SS-1c "SCUD-B" w/MAZ-543TEL and require reference photographs of this unit. I am especially interested in interior photographs of the MAZ-543 TEL as well as photos of Iraqi or Iranian units. Does anyone know/have any photos of this type?

I have searched the web and couldn’t locate anything specific to Iraq or Iran. Nor could I locate any interior photographs.

Is the Iraqi color scheme depicted in the instructions accurate?

What was your impression of this model? Appreciate any advise/suggestions. Note: This will be the first model that I have built in a very long time.

Regards,

The best I can offer is Concord's "THe SCUD and other Russian Ballistic missile Vehicles" No 7037. It has one shot of the inside of the left front compartment.

It also states that a basic sand color is standard for export vehicles to the Middle east.

Leader, I built the Scud years ago...back when I was a better builder than painter. I thought it was a GREAT kit. I know now that the details are a bit sparse, but I thought the fit was just fine. I had no warpage or any other major problem. Event he wheels and suspension went on straight and level without any fancy jigs or guides. I am not sure why people are so put off by this kit in reviews. I have two others yet to build. :-)

leader,

So far the kit looks good but I have to admit I haven't gotten very far yet. As I mentioned in other post this is the first kit I've done in over 20+ years so I am taking it nice and slow. Thus far, I have been conducting a lot of research on the Maz 543 and SCUD B. Jacques, recommended "The SCUD and other Russian Ballistic missile Vehicles" from Concord publication as another data point.

I have noticed from photos on the web that some folks have apparently had problems with wheel alignment. I'll keep my eyes out for potential problems in that area for sure. As this thing progress, I'll post some photos for feedback. Still need to decide if I want to go purely static or do some type of diorama.

I am also doing reseach on the F-15 E Strike Eagle as I have Revell's 1:32 scale F-15 D/E on my bench as well. Bought this kit over ten years old and had lost the instruction sheet. Thanks to a helpful modeler on another forum I was able to download a set of instructions from http://www.f-15estrikeeagle.com/.

Hey ScudHunter.....well as I have not built this kit myself.....I am trying to find one in the sub $40 CAN range....hard to find.....however my best friend is actually putting the finishing touches on one....and he can tell you that he had some pretty sizable warpage problems....all worked out through many late nights and uttered threats and curses.....and I am sure he is very happy with the results.....but he would probably say that it would be along time before he would ever tackle another one of these. I myself....I have both the interior and exterior PE sets....but alas no kit!!! Also looking for the Dragon SA-9 kit, of which I also have the PE set for, but no kit....lol....pretty smart hmmm? putting the cart in front of the horse!!!

Here is the thread he started: https://armorama.kitmaker.net/forums/7938&page=1

Here is another thread of somone looking for info on it: https://armorama.kitmaker.net/forums/8879&page=1

Hope this helps!!

viper,

Thanks for the links to those threads. I'll incorporate that info into my research. I'm compiling a list of links that I've found on the web that has reference photos of the Maz 543 or SCUB B missile. I am also including a links to photos of the Dragon model.

You mentioned that you had interior and exterior PE sets for this kit in your post. Sorry for my lack of knowledge but what exactly is a PE set.. Do I need one?

I noticed that this kit has plastic tires. What's up with that? Don't manufacturers use real rubber times anymore?

OK....PE is a photoetch set to make the details come out a little better.....personally I have only ever used one set before...and it was pretty much a disaster.......but I got all 3 sets for like $6 CAN each.....considering they retail for $20-$30.....I grabbed them....despite not having the kits. Now having said that...the exterior PE set is only about 70% accurate...and the interior one is what Eduard thought it should look like, as there were any pictures to go by.....either way....they would probably add a little detail to the kit. They are relativly small PE sets though....more so than what I have seen for other AFVs.

Yes it has plastic tires....I thought this was very strange myself as well, as the other Dragon kits of wheeled vehicles have a rubber like tire compound......but according to my friend....where they were plastic....they were easier to paint and weather where they were plastic.

Well if you are finding refs for the Maz and the Scud.....have fun......both myself and my friend scoured the internet....there just isn't that much out there for refs.....absoultly nothing for the interior.

Jeepney,

Thanks for posting this link I had not seen these photos before. Does anyone know if these colors of the interior are accurate? For a desert sand color exterior I would not have expected the interior of the cab to be pastel green and blue.

From referance material the majority of the MAZ interiors have been a light shade of green with the acception of the fueling cabin... which is an off orange colour. I am just putting the finnishing touches on the DML SCUD kit and hope to have pic's posted soon.... after it get's it's first public apperance at the Maritime Modelers Convention here in Halifax!

blackfly,

Thanks for the info. Look forward to seeing your TEL pics. Good luck in the competition.

FYI. For anyone who is building or considering building this kit, I just recently found out that Mission Models has the Dream Catcher replacement resin wheels in stock. Give Jon Tamkin a call (323 666 4228) or send him an email - he was very helpful. [email protected]

A big thank you guys!!!! Phew!
I bought the Dragon kit 2 weeks ago and started to build it. It looked to be a beauty in the box! Anyways ....... started building a had quite a bit of filling to do ...... especially the cab for passengers(?). The roof nowhere near fitted properly. Needed plastic card to fill up the big gaps. Some other small problems like fitting the cab sections to the chasis as well. I then had to fill out some areas between the different sections as there was no sidings for some of them.
But when I got this far ....... I fell in love with it all over again and am looking forward to start the missile and missile holder this weekend. I decided to check here for some links or sites for reference. A big thank you to all the guys for your input but especially to Scudhunter for that list of links ------ a library of references. Made my life so much easier. I generally build OOB, but like to add little simple things that improve the appearance and wanted some painting refs also. Thanks again guys!

Fellow modelers,

FYI. Eduard’s interior (35 540 SCUD B interior set) and exterior (35 539 SCUD B exterior set) SCUD-1c photo etched kits are the leaders of their 1/35th scale collection for May 2003. These sets replace the very old sets for Dragon's SCUD-1C kit. The bad news is that they aren’t cheap: each kits is retailing for about $25.00 USD.

For more information on Eduard’s latest releases for this month see http://www.eduard.cz/
