I am building Tamiya's M1A1 kit and have a few question, sorry if they have been asked before.
There are two cylinders that look like some type of ammo containers that appear to be used to carry personal gear that can be mounted on the turret rack. Are they smooth on the side or is there a step or lip just before the end that looks removable?
The sand color on the M1A1 photos I have seen range from a very light almost white yellow to a mustard color that almost matches the artwork on Tamiya's box to Earth and Pinkish Sand on others. Is there really such a variation in colors? I would think it was my monitor settings to the lighting when the picture was taken but I do not see such variations in the uniforms of the soldiers and tankers that may be on or near the tank. Is the color for ODS and OIF different or have more variations?
After finishing a Acadamy Abrams the Tamiya is a nice relaxing out of the box build in compairison but being ignorant of M1A1 details I do not know what era the Tamiya best represents? ODS?
Since I am limited to rattle cans what brand would be a close match for a desert color Abrams? I was thinking Floquil Earth?
Thanks,
CW

These are 203mm (8") arty powder cans. There should be a lip where you mention. They are usually used to carry rolled up maps.

The color for ODS and OIF does vary. The official sand color for both time periods was/is CARC Sand. The closest match is Testors Model Master Sand, FS 33531. Some vehicles for ODS were painted hastily in a locally -made Saudi sand color that was not to FS number specs. It was darker and more tan. Testors Model Master US Army/Marine Gulf War Sand is this color. Lighting , monitor colors, photo effects, etc. do play a big factor on how the color of the tank looks as well.

It depends which Tamiya Abrams you have. I'm assuming it is their older M1A1 kit ( # 35156). This kit best represents an ODS tank out of the box. It has older features such as T-156 chevron-block track, the older gunner's sight box (but this is still seen on more modern tanks as well), and rear hull mounted APU.
Their newer M1A1/A2 kit (#35269) represents an OIF tank.
Both need additional details and minor corrections to bring them up to the latest standards seen in Iraq.

Sorry, can't help you with a spray can color for the Sand.Since I am limited to rattle cans what brand would be a close match for a desert color Abrams? I was thinking Floquil Earth?

Yes it is this kit however I got it used off of ebay and the original tracks were missing so the seller threw in later style track without cheverons (bigfoot). Would bigfoots be accurate for ODS? If not I can swap them out for the earlier type that are in a M1A1 with mineplow I got in the same model lot. I am glad you mentioned the APU on the rear hull. Was it more common with or without it? Yes, the powder canisters do come in dark green. Sometimes they are repainted on the tank though, so they could be sand as well. Unfortunately, I can't find any pics of them now.
The T-158 "Bigfoot" tracks were introduced about the time of ODS, so they would be correct. The APUs on the hull were on some tanks from stateside. It was probably about 50-50 on having them vs. not.

For the ODS sand color (the non-standard color applied in Saudi Arabia that Gino mentioned) you may want to try Tamiya's own TS-46 Light Sand spray can color. It is an almost exact match to the Testor's Model Master US Army/Marine Gulf War Sand color.

My second M1A1 I got in 1989 had the bigfoot style tracks. The map cans would have been dismounted and placed inside the tank when it went in for painting. It would have stayed that dark satin green color. Most of them were labeled with the tank's bumper number and normally 1:50,000 or 1:25,000 based on the scale of the maps. My tank had two cans, one with the 1:50,000 to get us to the German border and another with 1:25,000 that had the area of our defensive positions. That gave us a better view of the area we were responsible to defend.
