Hi!

Just a quick question about Sherman use in the French army. Wonder about the M4A1 w 76 mm gun and T23 turret. Did they use them for a time after WW2 as well?

Kind regards Mats I

Hi
You should have a look at chars-francais.net website. You'll find a complete listing of all French Shermans (listed by names) :
http://www.chars-francais.net/listing_m4.htm
You'll find some pics of M4A1 with 76mm gun there as well (along with a lot of info about French Shermans...)
Maybe you'll find some answers to your question....

Edit : talking about postwar 76mm M4A1s, there seems to be one in the smallpicture below (Assemblée Nationale, Paris 1961 ), but I'm no expert :

Thanks for the very fast reply!

Well have taken an look at the website. But my knowledge in the French language is in a kind word very vague.

But nice to hear from you and seems to me that they soldiered on for a good time after -45 in French service.
Then I looked around at the website did I found some other interesting stuff. But found that the French army used some Panthers around -45. Did they last for long or did they find their way to some silent resting place soon after the war was over?

If you go to the homepage you can change the language to English. HTH. Nick

According to this website, mainly 2 units (503rd RCC and "6eme Cuir") were partially equipped with Panthers that were rapidly phased out because of the lack of spare parts - the manufacturer's guarantee had expired ...) There's a 1947 picture showing some during maneuvers...

Hi Mat

The French did use a great deal of American weapons and gear during the fighting in French indo China. I recall seeing pics of some shermans being used. As far as exact make / model my memory is not that good.. Check out the book " Armor in Vietnam " {French Indo China } for more information.
Good luck

Yes, they also received additional stocks to replace the worn out M4A2 and M4A4 tanks then in service, including some with HVSS suspension. You can see a nice selection of them in the French film, "Is Paris Burning?" shot in 1966.

I'd also VERY strongly recommend The French Shermans of the Liberation 1943-45 very reasonably priced and absolutely packed with useful information. You can see a Review of it here:
