G'day guys
been working on and off with this one for nearly a year now, and i finally got me act together and finished it.
The diorama depicts the Battle of Buna, New Guinea, on the 18th of December 1942.
The Battle of Buna was fought from November 16 1942 until January 22 1943 between Australian-American and Japanese forces.
The battle had been somewhat unsuccesful until mid december of December 1942, the Australian 18th Brigade with the first squadron of tanks to be used in the battle, from the 2/6th Armored Regiment, were moved up from Milne Bay to reinforce the Allies.
On the 18th of December 1942, the 18th Brigades first attack was launched, with support from 2/6th Armored, they broke through the japenese defenses, wiping them out literally bunker by bunker. By the 29th of December all Japanese forces in the area had been destroyed, and this phase of the battle had been a success. Australian forces continued to clear the Japense from the surrounding areas until the 1st of January, when the bulk of the enemy was finally destroyed, leaving the remaining days of the campaign comprising mostly of "cleanup" operations, eliminating the few remaining pockets of japanese resistance.
The diorama consists of home made palm trees, with the fronds coming from Preiser. The figures are all airfix multipose, and the Stuart is from Academy.
I really enjoyed building this diorama, all feedback is of course welcome!
Cheers

Hi David. It may have taken a year, but it has definaly been worth it. Very dramatic diorama, with lots of strong points. Your skills have improved on a lot of things, but your figure painting stands out especially. Those two "just shot" Japanese soldiers, are really excellent.
Of course there some small things I could think of nit-picking ... but I think you´ve come such a long way, and this deserves applause more than critic. Good photos as well ... everything looks so clear. Nice one.

Hi David,
Wow - some superb poses there
I especially like the way you have "posed" the helmet straps on the guy throwing the grenade

And an overlooked subject to choose.

I acknowledge the craftmanship which is excellent - but the theme is much too bloody and violent for me

cheers for all the kind feedback, i'm glad to hear you all like it.

Jan... Cheers mate, as for the theme, yeah its not the most pleasent but its what happened everything we model here in military modelling has the same theme, killing, though we dont build military models for any love of this underlying theme, its what these machines and weapons have been made for, i don't build such a graphic diorama (mind you if it was to be close to accurate as far as that goes, thered be far more bloodshed shown) because i love the action or think it looks "cool", i build it as a reminder and my personal tribute to the sacrifices and the sheer terror my countries troops endured to make sure their families, the bloke next door, and everyone else could remain safe and free.

Great job David,
Well layed out scene , great action poses ! Interesting theme. What can we wish more ?
Some more colours perhaps on the ground and a different colour on the cut line of the fallen palm.
Well done

Ola Wallabi Boy (i know I will get this one back)
That looks stunning mate. It truly does... some fantastic action. gives a bit the feeling that I'm a spectator at a film set or something like that. Bloody or not it has a brilliant action. It is an original subject. and it has good lines... And your skill didn't just get better it took a sprint in seven league boots and in a very short time too.
Me like.
En to end in the words of our good Down under Fishing Friend... Yibbedi Yibbeda thank your mother for the rabbit

Excellent work,
A well thought out and gritty subject. The adaptation of the airfix figures is excellent (Particularly as Frank mentions the 'just shot' Japanese) and really portrays the feeling of action in the diorama. Tha palm trees are also great as is the stuart.
My only sugestion would perhaps be a wash for the figures to bring out the shadows a bit more.
Great work,
James

Overall very nice work. I like the theme and consistancy of it all. Work well done. The one big thing I would like to see is a framed base. Not a necessity just a finishing touch.
I love the genre, you don't see to many Pacific projects.

Hey Cobber,
So this is the dio you'd been plugging away at eh?!
Firstly congratulations on completing this dio.I know how much this battle means in Australian history, it was extremely savage and a non deservedly forgotten about chapter in the war of the Pacific .
I must say that these multipose figures from Airfix look a real treat..i'm finally going to get my head around the idea to buy some one day! You've hit the nail on the head with the dio mate, the figures are very nicely painted, composition and groundwork spot on.The only things that i can pick out though would be to add alot more tropical litter strewn about the place and add some dirty patches to the figures knees etc.If they'd come out of the trench area you'd expect to see their uniforms to show some wear and tear.As Scott also mentioned, framing everything off would give the dio much stronger presentation.
As for the "gore" content, i think that you've been very subtle with the amount of injuries sustained..
Good on ya digger,
Shay

What have you done to Robert?!?!
Love it mate. You have made the sparse jungle spring to life...And the fighting nature of both sides with bayonets fixed...
Good irregularities on the groundwork too.
I like dioramas that have an overview of the real story written before them;
Really draws the viewer into what is being seen.
What is the Japanese machine gun that has the side fed magazine like the Sten?
Cheers

G'day guys
once again thanks for the feedback, im really glad you all like it.
Shay-Yep agree with Scott, as soon as i can get a hold of nice framing for the base thatll get done, as for more jungle litter, yep plan to possibly add some more in the future. Dirtying the uniforms totally skipped my mind, ill get on it right away.
Brad-that SMG is, i think, the Type 100, go here for details... Type 100 link
Also mate, you reckon i should bother entering it at the expo this year, i can only go in open nowadays so there will be stiff competition, might have a chance though dunno what do you think?
Cheers

hey davo, man nice diorama, i always admired your attention to detail and i think your figures just like in all of your other dios are really amazing. just some tips, you might want to add some more jungle litter on the ground and some more variations in the terrain. other than that, terrific.
keep it up.
