I decided to sign up for the group build to try omething different. I, being a primarily modern armor fan, do not know a whole lot about WW2 armor, specifically that used in this campaign. Can anyone shed some light as to what was used? I don't have a preference as to if the armor is Axis or Allied, so anything is open.

the german panther was used even before it had the last of its bugs out.I'm pretty sure the russians used the t-34. these are the more easy tanks to find at a hobby shop ( except mine ) with proper colors and nice detail work it could really shine. ( except since they were painted in flat colours #:-) )

The Germans did not use the Panther during Barbarossa,it did not enter service until the middle of '43. Barbarossa was in '41.
As for what was ues,you can build an early Pn 111,or Pn IV. A StuG "a" or "b". Or a Pn2. Any of these would be appropriate

That's what I was looking for YodaMan - I'll tell you, finding that sort of thing on the web was proving to be quite tough.

Adam has listed a fairly comprehensive list of Soviet and German vehicles available in the Operation Barbarossa Group Build thread. Even though I am the OB group build leader, I defer to his expertise as far as what was in use by whom.

Airwarrioir,
You are right and wrong. Panther was indeed used in the RUSSIAN campaign. But it was too late for it to be used in Barbarosa, which was the campaign to invade Russia. Hope you are more clear now.

Oh don't worry Kent, I'll be doing that too. School's coming to a close so there will be lots of time to work on my modelling projects.

Remember, the fighting on the Russian front went on for 3-4 years. The Operation Barbarossa group build is only focusing on the the first six months.
This build is for fun, a way for modelers to participate together across the world. There are a few types of tanks that had early variants in use, but not later variants. The T-34/76 and PzKpfw IV come to mind. Each has variants that participated so caution must be taken when selecting the proper "Ausf.'s" or marks to build.
Since this is a friendly competition, I would suggest that one err on the side of caution when chosing a kit. We don't want someone spending 2-3 months working on a kit and then have a fellow participant raise the question of whether the vehicle did or did not exist at the time.
Have fun guys, don;t make this more complicated than it should be.
