Anyone else ever had problems with painting field glasses when they're cast onto the front of a 1/35 figure (as opposed to supplied as a separate part)?

I've just spent all day working on an Alpine Miniatures DAK officer. He turned out fine except for those damn field glasses and their straps - I just couldn't get a clear edge definition of the outline, so in the end I finished up starting over from scratch (nice paint job stripped off, several hours work down the pan) in order to remove them and remodel the entire front of the tunic.

Just needed to let off steam
