Introduction
This review is of the
Rusty Rail 1/48 - O scale vignette casting
RRMS-O-25, Junk Yard Jeep. It offers 1/48 modelers a detailed vignette or a subject for a larger scene.
This is an old army jeep that has seen its better day and lays stripped in a field somewhere. I made this for BattleJunk but since it is 1/48 scale it will work at an old sawmills junk yard, etc. This casting is a one piece casting for the detail guys to have some fun.
The model
Rusty Rail packs this model in a strong plastic bag sealed with a stapled card label. This casting is 3" x 1 1/2" x 10/16" and comes unpainted.
Cast as a single piece in buff resin, the detail is fascinating! I have no idea how Rusty Rail does it but their castings are full of undercuts and recessed detail, such as injection molding is only able to achieve with high-tech slide molds. It is sharply cast.
The nice thing about hulk subjects is that one does not have to worry about flash or scratches or the like, yet my sample had almost no flash. I only had to carve it out of the radiator grille and headlamp holes. One seat seems to have a corner that did not completely cast - or did it burn away???
detail
The jeep is modeled as settling into a grit textured ground base. It has been stripped of useful parts, or the items were knocked away. The driver seat back is cast but it was fragile and I knocked it off.
An engine is displayed with no hood to block the view. The undamaged radiator grille slots can be carved open.
The exterior lacks dents and scratches. Hand holds will have to be fashioned from wire or sprue; I decided they were removed.
instructions, painting guide, decals
None. I decided to paint the jeep as though it recently suffered an engine fire, and the back is holding water.
conclusion
Rusty Rail has created another interesting casting for 1/48 modelers. It can be a component in a larger diorama or be its own vignette.
This casting has crisp casting and good detail.
Modelers of WWII and later should be able to find good use for this model. Recommended.
We thank Rusty Rail for providing this model for review here - on Armorama.
