Wings and Wheels Productions (WWP) will be familiar to many already, they have an excellent range of photographic walkabouts of various vehicles that are both useful to modellers, vehicle enthusiasts and restorers alike. This is a look at one of the recent releases covering WW2 German Light Solo Motorcycle this title is specifically aimed as a photo manual for modellers
the book
The book measures just over 9 ½ inches by 9 inches and is finished with a high gloss cover comprising 72 pages of good quality colour photographs and short sections of text. The book features a number of motorcycles these include the DKW RT125, DKW NZ350 early and late models, Zundapp K350, BMW R12 and BMW R61 motorbikes. The book is laid out in the familiar WWP format, front and rear cover and first page photographs are detailed on the inside of the front cover as are all the reference and source material. The opening pages show individual pictures of the machines featured throughout the book with the first walkabout of the DKW RT 125 starting on page 6.
This is followed by the walk around of the DKW NZ350 starting on page 20 with the early version featured starting on page 36. The Zundapp K350 walk about starts on page 44 with the BMW R12 feature starting on page 54, a BMW R61 rounds up the walkabout starting on page 64. Featured on page 71 is a single picture of the DKW RT 125 owned by Martin Wilby in the UK and page 71 has a single picture of the Phanomen Ahol 125 and closing the book is a single picture of the NSU OSL 251.
The quality of the photographic work is excellent, detail pictures of all the main bikes featured show these machines from every aspect giving the reader an excellent full and close up detailed picture. Full credit must also be given to the owners of these original restored machines.
Conclusion
Great quality photographs and close up detail of the motorcycles is provided making a valuable resource for those interested in building models of these machines. Whilst these days a lot of information can be found on the web, personally I find a book that you can hold in your hand, carry around and browse through at you leisure much more pleasing and satisfying.
I like the overall quality of these books and the way they are laid out for easy reference. As a resource for modellers I can’t fault them.
I've recently been given the opportunity to review a number of WWP publications and they certainly provide valuable reference and inspiration to model the vehicles shown, particularly in subject areas I'm unfamiliar with. I have the R067 Bedford QL 3 Ton WWII Trucks title in my collection already and it will prove very useful when I begin building the IBG Bedfords.
