introduction

M2A1 Ammunition Can or Box was first introduced during 1950s to hold link belts of 100 cartridges of .50 cal. ammo for M2 Browning machine gun, but later it is used to transport and store many other ammo types like 5.56 mm, 9 mm, 45 cal and 7.62 mm cartridges. It is made of steel and seam welded. Latch, hinge and handle are spot welded to body. Metal bar handle attached to the lid by rectangular wire loops so it can fold flat for stacking or lift up for carrying easier. The lid skirts are angled down from the hinge end, then ran parallel to the top as the skirt approached the latch end. They protect contents when lid is partially opened. Rubber gasket under lid makes near waterproof seal when latch is closed.

M2A1 ammo can is painted olive drab. Stamped markings may include the manufacturer's name, the model and year of production. A cartridge shape may be embossed in the lid to indicate direction of loading. Paint is usually yellow and used for stenciled markings to identify the content.

Two M2A1 ammo boxes are stored in Wirebound Plywood Ammo Crate. Their maximum protection, ability to take rough handling and high stacking, and lower cost, make these crates the most practical packages for ammunition and other military supplies.

packing & casting

Parts come well packed in standard light brown cardboard box labeled with a photo of painted product. Resin parts are inserted into a transparent zip-lock bag. Resin quality is excellent with no casting mistakes. There will be no need for a cleanwork as casting blocks are removed.

kit contents

  • Two sprues for closed Ammo crates. Each sprue has three crates cast in different positions. Wood texture and wirebounds are well defined.

  • Two M2A1 Ammo Boxes

  • Parts to build an open Ammo Crate. Two side covers are given as seperate parts and main part can be bent easily to build the crate.

  • A water side decal sheet with stencils of ammo cans and crates is supplied.

    conclusion

Another nice set to add realism to Vietnam dioramas. It can be used with figures or vehicles.
  • SUMMARY
Highs: Excellent cast with no problem. Decals make them so real.
Lows: Boxart is helpful but modeler may need a search where to add decals on boxes and crates.
Verdict: Useful kit to add realism to Vietnam scenes.
