Scale 4WD redesigned the wall thicknesses of this 3D print from his original 1/10 R/C scale crate upon request. He responded with this offering only a couple of weeks after my comment.
I ordered the Frosted Extreme Detail Matte translucent plastic option that showcases the incredibly fine and intricate details. This was described as model version 2 that was updated on July 9, 2015. The price matches similar quality 3D items of this size. I did take advantage of a limited free shipping deal from Shapeways.
The item came in the mail delivered from Shapeways in their standard zip lock bag in a cardboard box cushioned with air packing bags. The milk crate comes from the bag without any sprue or extra flash ready for washing and painting. No trimming or sanding was required with the small 3D print steps from Shapeways. This 3D print material is more brittle than styrene, but from other examples I have worked with, this clear print could be carved and sanded as desired if necessary. The only little surprise was in the crate’s solid bottom, but otherwise the molded mesh pattern matches what I had in my dorm room and what you see in the shop.
I used only an alcohol rinse and dry before priming. The photos show it after a coat of Tamiya Fine Primer from the can. After finding a range of brightly colored full size examples on the web, I chose an airbrushed coat of Tamiya acrylic X-6 orange. Perhaps a clear coat or pin washing could be added later.
That’s it, ready for the truck bed, bustle rack, or campsite. Clayton seems very responsive to customer ideas and requests. This one was much appreciated. Please visit his store and FB page:
