Introduction
BMW R 75 by Artitec is a resin & photo-etch kit scaled to 1/87 (HO in model railroading). While this kit is labeled the civil version (item 10.279), I am presenting it as the identical military model, item 87.044.

Artitec also makes an R75 with the sidecar. The solo cycle and sidecar combination are available in military (87.043) and civil versions (items 10.279 & 10.280).

BMW motorcycles are iconic to enthusiasts of the Wehrmacht. The R75 was a 750cc machine developed at the request of the Wehrmacht in the 1930s and widely used in WWII. They were frequently produced with a sidecar. It was so successful that Stalin allowed several to be purchased and evaluated; judged useful for the Red Army, they were approved for copying.

The R75 is very popular with civilian riders and running BMW R75s are highly prized.

The Kit
This simple kit consists of two resin parts and five P/E parts.

Casting is crisp, and except for some flash so minor that it brushes off, without flaws and the P/E is sharply etched. The space between the fenders and tires, and seats and frames are not open but those voids are so small as to be practically unnoticeable in 1/87. A factory profile of an R75 shows a tightly fitted machine as well.

Detail
Artitec cast the wheels open without trying to replicate 1/87 spokes. Most of the Motorrad is cast in 2 pieces: frame; four-stroke two cylinder flat twin OHV 750 cc engine; transmission; front/rear wheel suspension; drum brakes; fuel tank; ignition System; seats; fenders; headlight. The exhaust pipe, handlebars, rear seat rider handle, outer framing and sidecar frame (not used in this kit) are the P/E parts.

BMW attached the transmission shifting and emblems on the tank and those items are molded on.

Instructions, Painting and Decals
No decals were provided. Considering how diminutive markings and insignia would be on this vehicle, that is no surprise.

Black-and-white line art with text and keyed symbols make up the instructions. They also include a painting guide referencing Humbrol and Revell. Painting for both civil and military BMW R75s are included. Weathering ideas for the military model are offered.

Conclusion
Artitec's minute motorcycle is a fine BMW R75 for the HO - 1/87 community. With good detail reproduced with crisp casting and sharp etching, it has taken the lead over other such BMWs I have seen.

Aside from some very minimal flash I can find nothing meaningful to complain about. HO - 1/87 modelers of WWII and post-war modelers of civilian bikes have a quality model available in this kit. Recommended.

Please remember to mention that you saw this model here - on ARMORAMA.

I'm a professional pilot with a degree in art. My first model was an AMT semi dump truck. Then Monogram's Lunar Lander right after the lunar landing. Next, Revell's 1/32 Bf-109G...cried havoc and released the dogs of modeling! My interests--if built before 1900, or after 1955, then I proba...
