Finishing the Batash

After the model had been primed the next step was to pre shade the model using NATO black. The wheels and the tracks were painted black and not just pre shaded. The basic color is AK Real Color no RC094 “IDF SINAI GREY since 1990. I had to add some dark green in order to get the shade that looked more accurate. Then the details were painted, such as tow hooks, wire ropes, antennas, canvas covers etc. The tracks were left in black color and were then painted with a brownish shade, such as Track Primer from the Panzer Aces line of Vallejo colors. Everything was sealed with gloss varnish.

The markings were chosen from reference photos. Their exact position is a little on the random side, since most markings on Batash vehicles are handpainted.

After the gloss varnish was left to dry for a couple of weeks I did some washes:
A light brown heavy wash on the tracks, followed by a dark brown pin wash and a medium brown wash.

A very dark pin wash on the rest of the vehicle, followed by a filter with a brownish-greenish accent.

A black wash followed by a brown heavy wash at the wheels of the mine roller. All of this was then sealed with a satin varnish layer.

After the satin varnish dried, I did the following:
First stage of chipping, using slightly lightened up basic paint color.

A heavy brown wash on the wire ropes.

Some streaks with brownish shades on the side skirts and the lower parts of the vehicle. I also did that on some parts of the Doghouse.

A light desert sand wash on the tracks, the mine rollers and the lower parts of the hull (not on the side skirts though). The final layer of varnish was added using a matt varnish.

Now comes the second stage of chipping using a dark brownish shade with some dark metal added, painted and glossed the searchlight, headlights, windows and periscopes. The depth/perspective of the Doghouse windows is not very good, I should have drilled out the windows (which Legend instructs you to do so) and mask the clear parts for painting and weathering. I did not do so because I stained some of the clear parts with glue.

The final stages of weathering were:
Paint the track guide teeth with Gun Metal.

Add dust effects with AK pigments (North Africa dust, Middle East Soil and Light Dust).

Use a soft pencil (5B or higher would do) to simulate the bare metal surfaces on the exterior of the track and on the surfaces where the wheels rub on the tracks.

Simulate the dirt on the exhausts with a black pigment.
The model was then glued to the base and the antennas were added.

A really nice build of an interesting vehicle. I've always felt that engineer vehicles like this are fascinating in ways that simple armour isn't. I enjoy building all sorts of AFVs but I love these support vehicles. As such, I am SO looking forward to finally getting my hot & eager hands on one of Takom's new incredible Bergepanthers! I've only been bemoaning their absence for years.
