Introduction:
MacOne Models is an aftermarket company producing a line of 1/35 scale armor and diorama accessories. Best known for their bold choice of subjects, MacOne recently offered yet another unusual scenery item... a silo. This review covers the kit combined with an useful modeling tool essential for part cleanup:
Silo with free sanding board (MAC35167).
Review:
The kit comes in a big cardboard box with the box art showing the assembled model. Opening the box reveals resin parts additionally secured in bubble wrap. Zip-lock bag holds several smaller pieces, thus assuring these are not damaged in transport. The box also contains a double-sided sanding board... a very useful tool for cleaning the pieces.
The kit contains 10 pieces cast in grey resin. The cast is absolutely wonderful with the details nicely represented in scale. I found no imperfections in resin whatsoever. Two laser cut methacrylate pieces are supplied in the kit as well. These are included to facilitate assembly of the silo.
As for the cleanup and assembly, MacOne Models produced a video showing the complete process, which should help modelers when building this kit:
link to youtube video.
The video shows the tips and tricks of the cleanup process using the sanding board included in the kit. Careful sanding ensures the large cylindrical silo shell connects well with the conical hopper. Also, follow the tips on positioning the four vertical columns using the methacrylate pieces supplied in the kit. This guarantees obtaining a perfect geometry of the silo support system. The entire process requires patience, but the end result is well worth the effort.
The assembled model is 20 cm high and has the diameter of 5 cm. The model represents a typical silo which can be used in many different diorama settings and regions, from WWII to modern day. The last photo in this review shows the scale comparison using a 1/35 figure... this thing is really big. As for what talented hands can do with the silo, check out the images on the bottom of this review. This model was made by Javier Redondo, a well known Spanish modeler.
Conclusion:
I'm very impressed with Silo (MAC35167) from MacOne Models. The kit offers a 1/35 scale replica of a silo... a tower structure for storing bulk materials. The pieces are perfectly cast in resin and are easy to clean using the supplied sanding board. The assembly might seem complex, but I feel an average modeler with experience in working with resin can handle it with no major difficulties. The video showing the assembly process helps.
Altogether, this is another fine kit from MacOne which could add a focal point to many different dioramas, from WWII to modern day.
