This review covers Drinks Cans (713), a set which delivers aluminum drink cans in 1/35 scale.
Review:
Wanting to add a soft drink can to my recent build, I browsed the internet to find suitable sets in 1/35 scale. I discovered several companies produce drink cans, but Royal Model offering caught my eye as being most realistic of the lot. I ended up ordering a set…
The set comes in a vacuum-sealed hard cardboard box featuring an image of painted and finished drink cans. The box art states the set also includes dented cans, not depicted on the image. Opening the box, I found the bag containing resin pieces and a decal sheet. The resin pieces are organized on two long carrier blocks, each carrying 16 cans. The resin looks great with nicely reproduced stay-on tab opening mechanism and lid details. Remember, these are microscopic features in 1/35 scale.
The cans are available in two slightly different variants, flat tops and necked cans, labeled 1 and 2, respectively. The first block carries full cans, while the other holds empty cans, dented and crushed in various shapes. The dimensions of the cans are pretty much accurate, with 1,85mm diameter and 3,6mm height in 1/35 scale, which converts to about 65mm diameter and about 125mm height… the typical size of 330ml-355ml can.
The decal sheet supplied in this kit includes 16 water-slide decals, perfectly printed in color. The decals include some of the most popular soft drink labels as well as couple of beer labels.
Painting and finishing:
I used Alclad gloss black base and Alclad white aluminum to paint the cans. I applied the decals and fixed them using MicroSol. A thin black wash was performed to accentuate the details on the lid. The finished can is tiny, but the details are clearly recognizable under high magnification. The same can be done with dented cans, perhaps using a stronger decal setting solution to conform the decal to the irregular surface.
Conclusion:
I love this set. The cans look great and feature super sharp details nicely delivered in scale. Addition of dented and crushed cans is a big plus. Along with the accurately reproduced shape and details of these cans, the decals are what makes this kit stand out. Perfectly printed and easy to apply, these will provide a colorful spot on many models and vignettes.
SUMMARY
Highs: Nicely cast, accurately shaped and detailed. The high-quality printed decal sheet is a big plus. With 32 cans (16 full and 16 dented) this set offers a good value for the money.Lows: None.Verdict: Highly recommended.
About Mario Matijasic (Maki) FROM: CROATIA HRVATSKA
You wonder how did this addiction start? I was a kid when my dad broght home a 1/72 Concord airplane; we built it together as well as couple of other airplanes after that. This phase was just pure fun: glue, paint, decals in no particular order... everything was finished in a day or two. Then I disc...
These are really trick and it would be great if they included a few crushed cans though that might prove difficult for the decals. Either way great for any modern scene as this stuff truly is world-wide.
I got them via eBay, but they are also available directly from Royal Model. Not sure who carries the line in the US.
The total of 16 decals are included in the set.
