Two Styles of Ammunition Boxes for Grenade Launchers

Introduction

Legend Productions continues to rapidly increase their range of 3D mastered small arms and elements. In this review I am taking a look at two offerings for the automatic grenade launchers seen mounted in a number of vehicles and on this occasion in the form of ammunition boxes and ammunition belts.

Review

As with most of the smaller sets from Legend Productions, these two offerings are packed in the end opening card cartons with a shrink wrapped plastic around it. Inside of this there is a Ziploc bag containing all of the resin castings for the products. In my case this resulted in both sets arriving in good order with one of the parts having separated from the casting bloc. The two sets looked at here have long titles and are:
LF3D050 – PA120 40mm 32 cartridge ammunition can set
LF3D051 – M548 40mm 48 cartridge ammunition can set

I have taken a very close look at these offerings from Legend Productions and I am very pleased with what I have found or should I say not found. The castings are all free of issues such as air bubbles that can be the bane of resin products. The pour plug between the ammunition boxes and the casting blocks is a flat connection and so will require they are removed with a saw or sharp blade and so be careful regardless of the method chosen. One of the lids broke free of the pour plug I am however pleased to say that due to how Legend Productions tackles connections the part broke free at the point it should have,

Set LF3D050 contains 10 closed ammunition boxes with very fine detail provided. There are two further ammunition boxes that are open and nicely hollowed out, the lids are provided separately and have nice detail on both faces. Finally four linked belts of ammunition are supplied which I am very pleased to see included.

Set LF3D051 contains 8 closed ammunition boxes with very fine detail provided. There are again two further ammunition boxes that are open and nicely hollowed out with the lids provided separately and again having nice detail on both faces. Legend Productions has again provided four linked belts of ammunition.

The only real difference between these two offerings are the depth of the ammunition cans and as such will make a nice visual difference if shown together as stowage on a vehicle. the carrying handles are supplied as part of the ammunition box and I would have liked to see at least a couple of ammunition boxes with separate handles in order to depict them being carried/moved. A negative of the set is that no stencil detail is included and while this would seem to be a very light detail on the boxes it is obviously missing. On the positive are the ammunition belts which if you purchase both gives you eight ammunition belts with twelve grenades in each belt.

Conclusion

While the guns get all the attention it needs to be remembered that the weapons need ammunition to function and these two offerings from Legend Productions take a step to address that need. From what I have seen the boxes are accurate as can be seen in the video below. I was unable to find visual reference for the deeper can being used for 40mm ammunition but that does not make it wrong. The weakness in both sets is the absence of stencils for the cans which lets down what is in all other respects a great product and I am surprised Legend did not include this detail.

wow, those look nice! For those interested, the links are snaked in box, layered, with black foam padding (at least when I was in) between each layer. So if your going to model a semi or fully empty can, be sure to toss a few bits of foam padding around the area as well.
