Introduction

Legend Productions has dipped their toes and now jumped in the deep end when it comes to 1/35th scale small arms weapons systems. These small arms offerings are 3D scanned and then cast in resin in order to provide highly accurate representations for the modeller to satisfy their need for accurate and well detailed elements on their models or with their figures. The item I am looking at here from Legend Productions is the Mk 47 Mod 0 40mm AGL with AN/PWG-1 Sight on SAG Shield Mount (Window Version).

Review

This offering from Legend Productions and titled ‘Mk 47 Mod 0 40mm AGL with AN/PWG-1 Sight on SAG Shield Mount (Window Version)’. This offering from Legend Productions is packaged in one of the end opening card boxes; in my case this is further protected by a stiff plastic that is shrink wrapped on the box making it stiff and improving its strength overall. Inside is a single sheet of glossy paper that covers the contents and construction of the elements of this model. There are two separate Ziploc bag containing the resin parts for the model in one and two grades of wire in the other. An examination of the parts did not reveal any major issues with the mouldings other than the light flash from the moulding process which is expected with resin products. If you have any issue with a Legend Productions contact them as they have always been very good about replacing damaged or missing parts as they rate customer satisfaction highly.

The Mk 19 grenade launcher is a great piece of kit but it has its limitations, a new grenade launcher that went into service with the US Military in 2005 is the Mk 47. This weapons system is about half the weight of the Mk 19, can only be fired in full automatic mode and is equipped with a built in sighting system that enables it to range a unit and then through the use of special ammunition cause grenades to air burst at specific ranges; so the days of hiding behind a wall taking pot shots at the enemy have come to an end. It is my understanding that this weapon is only used currently used by Elite and Special Forces in the US Military (that may have changed) and is also in service with Israeli and Australian military units.

The ballistic glass panel shield is well moulded and detail, both parts of the glass holding unit will need cleanup due to flash and the glass panel will need to be cut to size. The shield appears to be correctly attached to the pole mount as far as I can see, but this area is difficult to find clear reference on. The connector between the shield and the support needs some bolt detail added and this will be a pin in my opinion as it is a bad enough task on standard plastic. No base plate is provided in this set and so this will need to be mounted on a model that already has a mounting point for it or some scratch work will be needed. The height adjuster has been well replicated on this offering with all of the elements present.

The sight set up on this offering is identified as an AN/PWG-1 sight; from what I can tell this means the weapon has the integrated sight as well as a night vision offering. The details on these sight elements looks good from what I can see and are further elevated by the wiring diagram which clearly shows how to plumb everything together.

The Mk 47 Automatic Grenade Launcher is a blocky piece of kit that is difficult to get a good look at. The muzzle portion of the weapon looks accurate and Legend Productions has even provided a short recess there, but ideally this needs to be drilled a fair bit deeper in order to add to its realism. The ammunition feed looks good and Legend Productions has provided a nice ammunition belt for the model, the odd part here is that they have also provided spent cartridges still in belt form and it is my understanding that this is a disintegrating belt system, not a big issue but strange none the less. All told an impressive looking Mk47 Automatic Grenade Launcher for mounting most likely on an M114.

Conclusion

I like this offering from Legend Productions but as the sets get more complicated they could really do with a better explained construction guide; this offering is a complex offering and I feel this would encourage more people to utilise this sort of product in resin. The moulding quality is very good overall with only the flash needing to be tackled as regards cleanup and the muzzle benefitting from drilling more material away. I really do like the detail present in this offering but it is quite complex for the instructions provided.
