Sd.Kfz.251/D Toolboxes

by: Vinnie Branigan [ TEACHER ]

Introduction

In all the original Dragon 251 Ausf.D kits, they give you the option of having one tool box on each side open. If you've wanted to take a different route, then up to now, the only option you had was to scratchbuils or buy a complete photo-etched upgrade package. Now you have the option of just replacing the tool boxes.

set contents

The set comes in the usual Eduard transparent pocket, with the contents well-protected with a thick sheet of card. Eduard's normal instruction sheet inside along with two fair-sized frets of photo-etch.

The instructions are up to Eduard's normal standards, thsi time contained on a single sheet,. printed on both sides, they give explicit instructions on what parts of the donor kit to remove, and where to cut, which parts to omit etc.

Each side of the the Sd.Kfz.251/D has three toolboxes above the fenders, each of which has a front opening door that hangs down. Whichever Dragon 251/D kit you choose to fit the Eduard set to, you have the choice with the Dragon kit of either the rearmost box on the left side, or the front box on the right side being left open, and of course, being made of styrene, they can be difficult to depict damaged. With thsi set you have the option of having all the toolboxes left open should you desire.

The main body of each side is constructed of two main pieces, which are obviously folded to shape, and then various other bits and pices are fitted to these such as the doors etc. There are also frames to fit inside this main housing which makes them look realistic when open. The doors to each toolbox look realistic on the inside too, with the lock area correctly depicted, and catches that can be depicted open or closed. The padlock for each box comes as two part assembly's, each with a photo-etched chain which would be better replaced with some fine chain. Eduard even supply quite a large set of tools to put into one of the toolboxes, or to spread around the vehicle, which are a bit 2 dimensional, but will look OK painted up!

in conclusion

A really useful set, at a reasonable price, and easy to install! Recommended!

My thanks to Eduard for the review sample.
