Here's a quick look at a new PE set from Aber which consists of a set of rear boxes for Panthers or Jagdpanthers. This set of photo etched rear boxes from Aber is obviously intended for the recent Tamiya 1/8th scale releases of the Panther G and Jagdpanther Late, although there are very much earlier kits that people may have in their stash that they will fit such as the old Frog kit.
the set
The set consists of one average-sized fret of photo etch, and a small instruction sheet, clearly showing how to construct and install the boxes. Obviously you'll need your own references to see if this particular type of box was present on the vehicle you intend to model, but if they do, then these boxes will obviously offer an effective, easy upgrade that will allow you to portray battle-damaged boxes, or even open ones.
What you actually get are two rear boxes, the kind with ribbed detail, and their supporting brackets. The boxes are easily constructed, being folded from one piece, and have top opening lids, with unusually for Aber, non-working hinges. The rib detail is obtained by running the point of a ballpoint pen along the reverse side of the detail, this will then produce the correct raised ribs on the outside of the part, the instructions to do this consist of the three letters 'PRS' which refer to the rear of the Card header attached to the bag, so make sure you read all the packaging too!
As said, the boxes are constructed from one main part that is folded, and the lid and back for each box is supplied separately. Three small supporting brackets for each box are provided along their bottom edge, as well as two 'clip' style brackets for the top of each box. The hinges are non-working, although the hasps for each box look good.
in conclusion
A simple little set that will look excellent when built, and offers a real improvement for your 1/48th scale Panther, Highly recommended.
