Middle East Head Set #1

by: Vinnie Branigan [ TEACHER ]

introduction
Warriors, part of the VLS Corporation, make a wide variety of upgrade parts in resin, and a huge range of replacement head sets. This set is the first in their range of Middle East head sets.

the set
The set comes in a small plastic bag with a cardboard header. It consists of six replacement heads in a cream coloured resin, all of which (apart from one) are still attached to their pouring blocks by the top of their helmets.

Five of the heads are wearing helmets, the sixth is wearing a wooly skull cap. Five also sport full beards, the other a moustache, and one of the figures wearing a helmet has a camouflaged cover on it. Each of the heads is finely cast, with good detail. No air bubbles whatsoever were evident. The only really negative thing about this set is the location of the pouring blocks. This means that the top of five of the figures is going to need cleaning up after it's removal. I really can't understand why it's placed here. At first I thought that it might have had to do with casting, and the fact that the heads have beards, but since the only figure to have the pouring block at the base of it's neck also has a full beard, it leaves me puzzled.

conclusion
A really nice set from Warriors, that will no doubt find their way into many a diorama. A pity about the location of the pouring block, but still a nice set! Recommended!

SUMMARY
Warriors produce a wide range of replacement head sets, and this is their first in the Middle East range. Containing six replacement heads, with all but one of their pouring blocks placed on the top of the head gear, they're nicely sculpted and wil look great painted up!

Good review Vinnie. Warriors generally makes really nice stuff. I agree with you on the casting block issues though. Recently I purchased and built Warriors LAV crew Part 1, and the casting blocks were also on the helmets. Why they cant simply attach them to the neck is beyond me. Thanks again for a great write up!

I think the reason for putting the casting blocks on top of the heads is to help acheive the crisp rim (overhang) of the helmet. Having the overhang pointing downwards (injecting the resin from above - thereby getting a pour plug on the top of the helmet) reduces the likelihood of getting bubble on the rim. If the head was upsidedown when cast (getting a pour plug on the neck) there would be the possiblility of getting bubbles caught on the rim, as the air would have nowhere to go. I do agree that a plug on the neck is preferable, and other companies (hornet etc) manage it, but i suppose warriors are just making doubly sure in terms of quality. I'd rather have a bit of cleanup on the top of the helmet than try and fix a rim full of bubbles. Great review Vinnie - keep it up.
