Introduction
It has been a very good year for Allied Modelers (no matter what the nay-sayers believe) and promises to get even better before the end. For the first time in decades, both the British Scout and Armored cars are getting a 'treatment' in injection-moulded plastic kits. The Sherman has been well-covered and the quality (and range) of both reference and AM sets has never been better or more ample.
In the case of the latter, After-Market (AM), there still remains a perceived problem due to cost, however, with this (and their other set for the engine/transmission)
SKP Model have produced two sets which are both moderately-priced and well-executed.
Skp's New Update Set
Once again, having built
SKP's Humber Scout Car for a previous review, it's pretty difficult test-fitting etc. for the donor kit. So, i'll simply handle this as a 'Preview' or 'First-Look' and pass the sets onto someone who has the (unbuilt)
SKP Humber.
The Set: SKP 019 - Interior Set for Humber Mk. I/II Scout Car comes in the usual sturdy cardboard box we have got accustomed to from this company. The 34 dark-grey resin parts are contained within a sealed, plastic jiffy bag and the Photo-Etch sheet is also within a sealed plastic bag.Three double-sided A4 sheets (in full-color) are folded together to make an instruction booket.
In Detail>
1) Coverage of the Set: The interior of the Humber, while not exactly large, does look a little empty if seen with the doors or roof hatches open. The set covers the following areas:
Interior of the superstructure.
Transmission and Rear Bulkhead.
Storage Racks, Radio, Ammunition boxes.
Crew Seats, Dashboard, Steering Wheel etc.
Interior Hatch Details.
Exterior Details such as replacements for the kit's exterior visors.
The Castings: Looking over the resin parts, the casting is very good indeed. Very crisp detail with no mould-lines, sink holes or air-bubbles are present or noticeable. One thing which is worth bearing in mind, is that the casting blocks are pretty substantial.
The Instructions: This isn't as simple an update set as one might think. The instructions are incredibly clear and concise. Everything is shown in exploded view with clear references to the kit parts along with additional diagrams where needed. Painting instructions are also very complete. There are a series of coded boxes indicating when to glue, bend, open hole and scratch-build (in a few minor items such as handles).
the use of the set
Logically, it's specifically designed for the
SKP Model Humber Scout Car Mk.1 (SKP 011) , however, it wouldn't be beyond the realms of possibility to use it with the Bronco Model Humber Scout Car either. It could, with some thought, be a very versatile set indeed.
