Aber 1/25th Photo Etch Set Grilles for SdKfz 181 Tiger 1

by: Matt Grzybinski [ OSTKETTEN ]

Introduction
Aber’s new release comes on one photo-etched fret containing two rear and two forward mesh grilles for the Tiger 1’s motor air intakes. Packaging is in the usual Aber manner with a small zip lock baggie containing the photo-etched fret, a piece of black construction paper, a sturdy section of cardboard for support, and the instructions behind it all. Instructions come on one multi color 4-1/8” x 5-13/16” single sided sheet. Being so small, they are a bit hard to read. Being grilles, there is not much to figure out from the instructions though.

Review
Examining the parts, it seems that Aber has shifted, for this accessory set at least, away from their usual brass. At first glance the photo-etch appears similar to Eduard’s nickel coated brass. When I sanded the back of one grille, I found this was not the case. Brass did not show thorough after a thorough sanding of the grill’s rear and edges. Taking an educated guess, I would say Aber’s new release are made of stainless steel, more akin to Tamiya’s photo-etch grille sets rather than Eduard’s. Not being a metallurgist (nor do I play one on TV), I will never know.

The grilles fit nicely on the Tamiya kit, with a slight bit of overhang on the sides for a bend. As you have come to expect from Aber, the interwoven mesh is represented nicely. There are cut outs on the rearmost grilles where the hatch holding hooks are located, and slight radius cutout for the forward grilles to accommodate the filler caps.

Conclusion
I would recommend these for anyone taking the plunge on the old 1960’s release of Tamiya’s 1/25th Tiger 1. This photo etch set is one of the only ones around for the old girl anyway!
SUMMARY
Highs: Great crisp detailed photo-etch one has come to expect from Aber. The woven mesh is spot on.
Lows: Small instruction sheet. It’s possible some might need magnification to read easily.
Verdict: Highly recommended. Any Photo Etch sets for 1/25th scale are definitely welcomed, especially when given the Aber treatment!
