Italeri’s 1/72 M-48 Patton

by: David Niescior [ AIRWARRIOR ]

The M-48 was built for the U.S army in the 1950s to replace the earlier M-47.With it’s 105mm main gun, and a rounded turret to deflect enemy fire the M-48 was a milestone in the development in American tanks. Here Italeri gives it’s excellent kit version of this tank.

Construction
Opening the box, you see the bottom hull, 6 part trees, and a decal sheet, which is packaged in shrinkrap with a piece of clear film. The instructions give optipns of building eithere the M-48/A2 or M-48/A3. This got me in trouble, as instead of giving you the usual “do this is you want to build the A3” you get two instructions, it begins with the directions for the A2, and then it starts back over again at 1 for the directions for the A3. Construction includes excellent fit, for every part leading up to the tracks, these, which I suggest you leave off until finished painting, reguire tweezers, a magnifying glass, and plenty of patience.

Finishing
The kit gives you 4 possible marking choices, one for 2nd platoon C company of the first marine tank battalion in Vietnam in 1970, one for the Army 3rd tank battalion of the 40th armored in Korea in 1952, one for the Israeli Army 7th armored brigade, 79th battalion circa 1967, and one for the U.S. Army first battalion 69th armor in Vietnam circa 1968.The decals went on great, with no trouble, in the exception of one which crumpled up, which was my fault. They had no wrinkling when I applied a flat coat and no silvering was evident. I finished my model in Model Master dark green enamel.
