1/48 Scale Walls
Classic Wall Sections and Columns

Introduction

A lot of modelers like to make diorama accessories, buildings and groundwork for themselves. Others either don't have the time, the skills or inclination. Among those modelers companies like Cast48 find their customers. This is a rather nice 1/48 scale wall and columns set in resin from them.

The Kit

The kit came in a stout cardboard box with the pieces sandwiched between layers of foam. You get two sections of wall and two pillars. The pieces are very cleanly cast in cream coloured resin. There were a couple of air bubbles on the raised rail sections on the columns, which I will either fill or cut away to depict damage. The wall sections are 99mm in length and 54mm in height and 8mm thick. The pillars are 9mm x 11mm and 59mm high. The texture of the surface is quite good and will come up well with careful painting. There is a raised rail at approx 20mm on both sides of the wall. The coping stones on the top are nicely molded.

Assembly

At the base of the walls and the columns is a lip that can either be filed away, or used to represent the foundations. Where the walls butt up against the columns, the raised rail on the column will need to be cut away. For this review I joined one column to one wall section. I filed the end of the wall flat and joined the column to the wall using CA glue. It is as simple as that. Because the surface of the column is slightly irregular some filler will be needed for the joint.. You can arrange the wall sections and columns to suit your diorama. Given enough sets you can form a continuous wall, gateways and walls with corners etc.

Conclusion

Nice and simple, but versatile, dio accessory set that can be used in multiple ways. I can't see anything about the style of these walls that limits them to any historical period or geographical area within reason. The Sherman in the accompanying photo is Tamiya's 1/48 scale Sherman, but these walls could also be used in 1/35 scale settings.

SUMMARY
Highs: Easy to use with minimal clean up.
Lows: At a time when modelers are feeling the pinch of recession, price would have to be a consideration.
Verdict: A very versatile set useful to the beginner and advanced diorama maker, and not limited to 1/48 scale.
