"Israeli Sherman : Tracing the history of the Sherman tank in Israeli service" by Thomas Gannon. ISBN 1-892848-06-6. Copyright 2001. Darlington Productions.
First of all, this is a hard book to find. I have seen copies on Bookfinder.com from $60.00 to $100.00. I contacted the author, and got one of the last few he had. I almost didn’t write this review because the book is so scarce. But this book is too good to ignore.
This is a hard cover book with color pictures on the front and back. It is 237 pages of black and white photos and informative text.
The book begins with a Sherman primer. This section is written at the beginner level and provides a nice introduction to the Sherman tank.
Now we get into the Israeli specific chapters: First Israeli Shermans, Early Shermans, M50/M51 Series, Israeli “Panzerstellung” (static Shermans used in defensive positions), Self-propelled Guns, Recovery Vehicles, Specialty Shermans (Including both early and late Ambutanks , Cherry Pickers, Training Vehicles and Crab flail tanks), and Where Are They Now.
The pictures are high quality black and white shots with informative captions. There are lots of detail shots which will be very helpful to the modeler. There are pictures of museum vehicles, restored vehicles, and pictures of vehicles in use.
The text is informative, interesting and easy to read.
Mr. Gannon is currently working on a book on Israeli Halftracks.
