introduction
This is an accessory set from Vallejo providing a cross section of some handy items.

the set
Provided in the Vallejo Accessory set 73999 are the following items:

Acrylic Matte Varnish 17ml #70520 - this is a water based acrylic resin top coat with a new ‘quick drying’ formula. Vallejo recommends that the paint job be completely dry (24 hours min.) prior to the varnish coat. It can be brushed (soft varnishing brush) or airbrushed. Matte varnish is provided in this set, Vallejo offers Gloss and Satin separately.

Glaze Medium 17ml #70596 - a slow drying colorless acrylic resin glaze used to mix with acrylic colors; improves flow characteristics, increases transparency and retards drying. Can be used with pigments or acrylic washes. It can also be applied with soft brush or airbrush.

Matte Medium 17ml #70540 - a water based ‘vinyl-acrylic resin’ medium used to extend colors and increase their fluidity and transparency. Softens the blending of brush strokes. Won’t yellow or change the tonality of the base color. Makes a good binder for dry pigments.

Decal Medium 17ml #73212 - alcohol based decal ‘softener’ used to get decals to conform to surface irregularities.

Decal Fix 17ml #73213 - a transparent water based matte acrylic used to topcoat and protect decals.

Sepia Shade Wash 17ml #73200 - Sepia toned transparent acrylic wash.

Black Shade Wash 17ml #73201 - Black toned transparent acrylic wash.

Pale Grey Wash 17ml #73202 - Light grey toned transparent acrylic wash.

Conclusion
This is a good “sampler” set from Vallejo. However as far as I can tell the Decal Fix and the Matte Varnish seem to be the same product (or very close).
SUMMARY
Highs: A pretty good cross section of accessory items so one can get an idea of some of Vallejo’s non-paint offerings (actually these are all paint related but for lack of a better term….)
Lows: As mentioned above, two of the included items appear to be close to the same product with different labels.17ml of a color wash (three of which are included in this set) isn’t a great deal of liquid unless you are using it as pin washes, on smaller scale
Verdict: As a ‘sampler’ for someone not familiar with this line of Vallejo products, this is probably a good introduction to the various offerings. However, for someone with more experience probably ought to purchase larger quantities of the products.

how were the washes? did they "flow" alright? how was their finish (grainy?)? how much coats did you need to get a satisfactory result?

No offense but it looks more like a "What's in the box" preview than an actual review It would have been quite interesting to know how the various products inside that set perform in use. Thanks for sharing

I've used a few of the products included in this set and followed the decal tutorial on Vallejo's website decals (scroll down). These 2 products I found to work quite well with the Decal Fix allowing easy positioning and better adhesion. The 'softener' isn't as harse as Solvaset in the wrinkle department, yet 1-2 applications does the job in making the decal conform around details. The washes, being acrylic, aren't grainy....but....I've had no luck with them as of yet. Some acrylic washes I've used allowed me to remove excess and blend in after they were dry. These, at least the way I've been using them, once dry (which is a matter of minutes) stay right where they are. Using acrylics can have a learning curve, one I'm very willing to spend some time on. The good news is this DVD is out (or being released very soon) with Mig showing how to finish using only Vallejo acrylic products. Hopefully many of the questions of using some of these products will be answered there.
