introduction

One of the strong trends in modeling is towards vehicles with stowage. After all, most AFVs and soft skins were there to DO something, and that meant fighting over extended periods of time. Soldiers quite naturally need tents, tarps, ground cloths and, of course, supplies in boxes. Value Gear has carved out a really excellent niche providing sharply-cast resin tents and tarps. Now they're moving into crates.

what you get

Inside the usual VG ziploc baggie are 22 "wood" boxes and crates of various sizes.

the review

As usual with Value Gear, the casting is excellent, with sharp lines, vivid details and virtually no mold release residue. Flash is almost non-existent, and there are hardly an pour plugs - a little work with a sanding stick, and these babies are ready to paint.

There has been some complaining that the spaces between the wooden slats is too wide. Those boxes with especially wide slat spacing look like Panzerfaust cases, which often did have spacing. If you don't like the gap, a little filler putty should solve the problem.

The wood grain is nicely under-stated and not the usual overdone gouges you see in other attempts at rendering realistic wood.

conclusion

As the name implies, there's terrific value for money in this gear. A few sets and you can pile the back of a truck high with "stuff," or else deck out a tank or armored car. Highly recommended.

SUMMARY
Highs: Reasonable price, generic, applicable to almost any time period after the Enlightenment for war or peacetime.
Lows: Only available from VG, but they have fast shipping. Some may find the spacing between the wooden slats too wide for scale.
Verdict: Highly-recommended.
