Introduction

PlusModel adds a combination resin and laser-cut wood accessory set for the Vietnam War period.

Review

Set 420 is a set of three crates, each to carry two boxes of .50 caliber ammunition. The set includes 6 resin ammo boxes and one laser cut wood sheet with the wooden boxes made up of separate top and bottom, sides and additional support slats. The wood is laser engraved with appropriate markings for the boxes. A set of decals is also provided for marking the ammo boxes.

The lacking detail is that the line drawing instructions don't include the numbers for the parts. This is only an issue with parts 5 and 7. Parts 5, wooden slats, are to be placed on the underside of the lid. Placement location is a little vague. It appeared to me that they go along the bottom edge of the crate top. Parts 7 go on the outside, but the ends are cut off.

My set included not the indicated .50 caliber ammunition boxes but rather a set of 6 .30 caliber boxes. I did assemble one of the boxes for the review. The wood was slightly warped but cutting the parts out was no problem. I used CA glue to assemble the pieces which prevented further warping but did instantly set the parts so any imperfection in alignment on my part was permanent. A small length of wire was also included to be wrapped around each box in three places as a reinforcement but the supplied wire (28 guage copper) was too short to do all three boxes, and appeared somewhat thick.

The .30 cal ammunition boxes were marred by bubbles in the resin surface, with interrupted the raised detail on the front and rear surfaces.

Conclusion

The completed box is nice in appearance and should be a nice addition to any Vietnam era vehicle or diorama, either holding the ammunition boxes or any other fitting accessory.
SUMMARY
Highs: Nice, laser cut and engraved wooden boxes. Decals appeared to be in good detail.
Lows: Bubbles in the resin casting of the ammunition boxes (wrong boxes for this set).
Verdict: This should add some good detail for Vietnam era models and dioramas.

I got back into the hobby a few years back, and wanted to find ways to improve, which is how I found this site. Since joining Armorama I have improved tremendously by learning from others here, and have actually finished a couple of kits. I model to relax and have fun, but always look to improve. ...
