The box art shows two of America’s Devil Dogs in the middle of some action which definitely looks like Iraq. The sculptor, Bill Chilstrom, did an outstanding job in creating these figures and Warriors did and equally great job in casting them.
They are cast in a nice cream colored resin with each figure coming in four separate pieces. They consist of the legs/ torso as one piece, the arms, head, and this is the coolest part, the weapons and hands are molded as a single unit. No more messing around trying to get the weapon to sit right in the hand. There are small locating pins on the parts and small sockets on others respectively, that aide in assembly.
Construction
After cleaning the parts up a little, I was able to dry fit them together and they actually stayed together, which says how tight the fit is. The weapons consist of an M16A2 and M16A2 with M203 grenade launcher. Both capture all the detail well. The only thing missing is are the slings, but those would be easy enough to add from scratch.
On most figures, where arms and torso meet, there are usually some seams to deal with. Not so with either of these figures. The fit is perfect. The head leaves some room for movement so as to position it for the best effect. One figure is cast with both eyes open and the other has one eye closed for that well aimed shot he is taking. The casting overall is good on both figures with just minimal flash to clean away. There was a small seam line running down the pant legs and arms of both figures, but was easy to remove with the back of a #11 blade. I left both figures attached to their pouring blocks for ease of handling during the painting.
Painting
I originally set out to build and paint these guys in the USMC MARPAT camouflage pattern, but after several failed attempts, I decided to paint them in the standard three tone desert camouflage instead. I painted my figures using Vallejo paints and love the way they dry to a dead flat finish. A wash of oil paints was applied to bring out the recessed details, followed by a light dry brushing to bring out the high areas. If you are interested in specific colors, just ask and I’ll send them your way. I didn’t want to take up too much space listing all that info here.
Conclusion
Overall these are some great figures. They capture the look very well of guys in action and will definitely add to a diorama if added. Regardless of the box art, these can be painted into either Army or USMC fighters. I hope I have shed some light on these. I am definitely looking forward to seeing more from Warriors along these subject lines. Thanks to VLS for providing the review sample.
