Introduction
In June this year I did a review of the
Resicast British 6 inch Howitzer Mk I as used in WW1 and by the BEF, a link to that review is at the end of this review. As a follow on for their 6 inch guns
Resicast have now provided a set of ammunition accessories for the early WW1 versions included in Kit No 35.1233.
The Set
The set comes packed in the standard Resicast format of double ziploc plastic bags with a card insert. The insert shows the product and manufacturers detail and a picture of the unpainted items.
The set is cast in light grey resin and consists of 15 shells of 3 types on five plugs, (5 x HE shell, 5 x HE streamline shell, and 5 x Star Shell) plus 12 x HE shells in wicker baskets and 12 x charges for the gun.
The HE shell, HE streamline shell, and Star Shell are presented in the same format as those for the original WW2 gun, the new addition to the set are the 12 x HE shells in individual wicker baskets. These are very nicely done. WW1 was primarily an Infantry and Artillery War and effective artillery could make or break a battle.
Conclusion
This is a nice additional set of accessories for the WW1 versions of the gun supplied in kit No 35.1233. They should enhance and add to any build you may be doing or could be used as individual items, stacked shells or loads on trucks or trains within a diorama.
According to the Western Front Association about 200 million shells (5 million tons) were fired during the war of which a large amount were 6 inch howitzer shells, which shows the important role artillery played in the conflict. 90% of casualties were caused by artillery fire. Depending on the popularity of the gun kit I would hope that a bulk load would be a possibility in the future but these are a very welcome addition for modellers in their own right.
No decals come with the shells so hand painting will be the order of the day. But decals or not these will add good additional detail for the weapon and it’s display.
Normal precautions apply when working with resin.
