KIT CONTENTS

Two highly detailed, solid resin pieces
Four sets of laser-cut, paper clock hands

REVIEW

The Ornamental Street Clock by Reality in Scale is a great example of top-notch mold detail, and quality casting.

Packaging

Packaged in a sturdy cardboard box, you'll find two solid resin pieces along with a small zip style plastic bag containing the laser-cut paper clock hands. Note: the sample I received erroneously called out three resin pieces on the label. The Reality in Scale website correctly refers to two pieces.

First Look

Upon examination of the two light gray, resin pieces (clock tower, and top), I was very pleased with the level of detail, and the crispness of the castings. I could not detect any air bubbles, flash, or plugged details. The laser-cut paper was clean and well defined. All four sides of this clock feature the same look/details namely an ornate clock face and well defined lions head.

Assembly

During assembly, a couple light passes of the top piece on some fine sandpaper was all that was necessary for a good fit. The parts were joined with cyanoacrylate glue and allowed to set. One small gap that I noticed under a corner detail was easily filled with epoxy putty. The assembled clock measures 3.5cm x 3.5cm x 13cm.

Painting

After giving the clock a light primer coat, I decided to paint it in a similar color scheme as shown on the box. I did opt to change the roof color along with some other details. Base coats were done using Vallejo acrylics, and then further weathered using oils.

One of the most challenging aspects to paint was the clock faces. Beautifully detailed, but incredibly fine, I found it took me a couple attempts to get it right. I finally chose to take a new pencil eraser, dip it in black oil paint, dab off the excess, then lightly tap the clock faces all over until I was happy with the results. With that task behind me, all that was left to do was to add the clock hands.

Upon first inspection, I was a little concerned with how durable the clock hands would be during handling considering how delicate they looked. Each hand comes connected to the sheet by one very small tab. With a new blade in the knife, I had no problem removing them from the sheet. In handling them, I found they were quite sturdy. I picked them up using the tip of my hobby knife, dipped them in CA glue, and gently laid them on the clock.

CONCLUSION

I am quite pleased with the results, and had a lot of fun working on this clock. The quality of the casting, and the intricate details make it a treat to build and paint. I think anyone constructing a 20th century European scene would enjoy having this well manufactured accessory on their diorama or vignette.
SUMMARY
Highs: Beautiful castings with incredible detail. Interesting subject.
Lows: Box art label could be better quality for modeler reference.
Verdict: Highly recommended. This beautiful clock will look great in almost any 20th century European scene. Easy to assemble and a treat to paint.
