Accessories placed alongside our models can really help set a scene's time and location. They also add a nice touch of interest to round out our displays. Reality in Scale proves to be a great resource for some outstanding accessories in 1/35 scale.

packaging & kit contents

Packaged in a sturdy cardboard box, you'll find three solid, highly detailed, single-part resin castings of covered loads.
The largest piece is 7x4.4x2.2cm, the pile of boxes is 4.5x3.7x2.4cm, and the jerry cans with the religious statue in a box measures 3x2x1.6cm.

review

This being my third product review of a Reality in Scale product, I had high expectations considering how nicely designed and cast the ornamental clock (kit #35138) and cabinets (kit #35206) were. I’m happy to report, the quality and craftsmanship continue.

Albeit a less glamorous subject than I’ve previously reviewed, these loads are definitely a great addition to any WWII diorama. The castings are extremely clean, and all details are crisp. I was especially impressed with the textures of both tarps as well as the quality of the folds represented. Also clever on RIS part, the loads are purposely left generic enough to render them appropriate for various national armies.

Based on the shapes of the tarps, it appears that one of the large pieces represents covered boxes, while the other may be 55 gallon drums, or other miscellaneous cargo. The smaller of the three loads adds a nice touch of interest with an open crate holding a statue of St. Anthony. Other touches of interest include a couple food sacks, a wooden barrel, and what appear to be bedrolls.

The only clean up I did was to sand the bottoms of the tarp covered loads so as to thin the profile of the tarp edges. As they came, they were a little thick. Very minimal effort on my part, and they were ready for paint.

Painting

After giving the loads a light primer coat, I based them using Vallejo acrylics. After the acrylics dried I used a combination of oil washes and oil drybrushing to enhance the details and give depth to the texture of the tarps and the grain of the wooden boxes.

conclusion

No disappointments here. On par with the quality one can expect from Reality in Scale. A versatile kit that is well engineered, and holds beautiful texture that makes painting a pleasure.
