Hi, my name is Mal Mayfield and I have been modelling seriously for about 25 years. My main interest is 1/48 scale second world war. I build all types and all combatants. I have built 1/35 scale "targets" and 1/72 scale modern aircraft, plus a couple of cars. I have also dabbled with figure painting. I was born in Nottingham (Robin Hood country, hence the avatar) and joined the British Army at 16. I was a "Sapper" a member of the Royal Engineers,I served for 24 years, as a Combat Engineer and left the service after completing a full career. My callsign, "Holdfast" is a reflection of my Army service. Holdfast was "radio speak" for Engineer. Of course when "target riders" or "wooden tops" wanted "Holdfast" they needed a Combat Engineer, ME. I've been out now for 19 years, my last job was, possibly, a modellers dream. I was the senior loco builder for the world renowned Roundhouse Engineering, building 16mm gas fired, steam powered, radio controlled garden locomotives. I finished at Roundhouse in December 2011and moved to Mullion in Cornwall where I am working for myself producing paint masks for scale models as "Miracle Paint Masks".
