Cheers!

Jurjen (who's MAZ is almost finnished! )

Thanks for your comments Jurjen.

The wheels are from ARMORY, follow this link

I have just seen your Maz, that's outstanding ! Congrats.

Hey Richard

Your project is going very good. Great camo on that BMP, It's a nasty time consuming job putting the tape on your model. But when al is sprayed the result makes it worth doing. Looking forward to see more.

Cheers Roel

Thank you Roel.

Next step pics coming soon !

Cheers,

Richard

Hello.
Nice BMP!

Do you have color photos of Finnish MAZ?
I also do a couple with him and T-72:

Nice build Gennadiy.
Unfortunately I have no color pic of the Finnish MAZ.

So, about the BMP-1, here are some pictures with the first weathering steps achieved (washes, pigments, metal scratches...). The process is not finished but the end is near for this BMP-1. There still remains the headlights, track paint details...

Can you hear the MAZ-537 approching ???

Comments welcome

Richard

Hi,

I was told on www.pienoismallit.net forum that the roundels were in the wrong place... I was crazy enough to trust Italeri's plan... while I got plenty o pics...

This had to be corrected to match the photos. It was done tonight :

The new roundels were made out of 1/48 Heller Mirage III french roundels...

Cheers,

Richard

Hello,

I have started working on the MAZ 537. Some corrections have to be brought to the kit and modifications have to be made to meet the Finland Army Maz standards.

I began with the engine and gas tank housing, which rear panel is different on finnish trucks than the one offered by Trumpeter :

Then the chassis with its Armory resin wheels (just set for the pic), it still needs some wiring :

fifth wheel supports have been added, as well as a new rear lights bar, finland style.

Then the winch box needed some work, new supports, to have it shifted a bit on the right :

I saw that important detail in the Tankograd Soviet special 2005 page 19, page 24, page 27... and AFV modeller issue 41 -july/august 2008 page 43. this pic also shows it to advantage :
http://www66.tok2.com/home2/tankguy/beltring08/maz537/maz537-01.jpg

So, this is what Trumpeter offers :

and I corrected it that way :

Impressive truck...

Soon 4 more !

Cheers,

Richard

Hi Richard!

I totally missed that point. You're right about the wrong position. Good job on that! The wheels look very impressive. One small comment - they miss a small seamline.

Hi Jurjen,

You're right, the seamline is missing

It is there on Trumpeter vynil wheels ...

About the wrong position, I noticed it only 2 days ago, when I was looking for documents about the winch. No worries, your MAZ is a very beautiful build ! I hope I reach half the result you achieved.

Cheers,

Richard

Hi Richard!
I knew you have been busy with that Maz, because itīs quite a while since your last update. Keep it going, itīs gonna be a real show stopper, I believe.

Hello Kimmo,

Yep, the last update is a bit long ago but that's not because of MAZ business, that's cos of holidays time. I spent two weeks by the sea on the riviera experiencing a hot, sunny, beach and ice-creams break with madam and the kids

Now I'm back and worked a little on the kits. I'm glad you like it

I have a question for you about the BMP. See, I'm building one myself with an old Esci kit and I'm pretty new at this plastic modeling thing. Anyways, heregoes:

First, how did you assemble the track beforehand and then disconnect it for painting? The track for me is always very fragile and I'm wondering if there's a better way to go about assembling it other than using testor's model cement.

Secondly, what compound did you use to fill in the little gaps in the models and sand down? Because the kit has quite a few seams that need a little filler.

I know these questions may seem a little basic, but I'm totally new to this and need some tips!

Thanks so much!!! et merci!!

Hi Michael,

Welcome to the hobby !

Well as regards the tracks, in the Dragon/DML kit, these are link-by-link, meaning one link is a part, yep you guess there were many parts... I am not sure you got the same in the Esci kit. Ain't these rubberbands ?

So with the tracks I had, I proceeded by test-fitting (no glue was used at this stage) the wheels and then glueing the tracklinks altogether taking care of not glueing the wheels on the tracks during this operation. Then I had a complete assembled track with the wheels being removable, both from the chassis, and from the track. It is a very convenient way to have your tracks get the right shape with no headache for painting. I hope this is clear, if not, do not hesitate to ask for more.

The filling compound is Tamiya grey putty. Very easy to use and the best one I know around.

Well dude, hope this helps.

Cheers,

Richard

Hi,

Here's a little progress with the kit.

I felt the driver cab looked naked and it was necessary to add some details, tho' most of the scratchbuilding will be hidden or difficult to see...

The back panel of the cab has a lever for the engine air starting valve, that is quite big and I wanted to have in my cab. Plus there's a kinda hardened "wallpaper" that is not done by Trumpeter :

Then I also wanted to add details to the floor, such as texture to this floor, a box at the right front of the cab, and the heater box. I also changed the seats for homemade ones, covered with lead foil to depict the slightly folded fabric covering...

Which at the moment gives the following when test-fitted :

Then I added some woodboards in the forward part of the trailor (I know Ukraine did use 'em but dunno if Finland army ever used this or not ? BTW these are removable)

And as the diorama is supposed to take place in Finland at a pine forest edge, I made my first ever attempt at building a pine tree with real pine small branch and "asparagus" (a plant that fills flower bouquets, yes, she was pleased with the flowers )

Cheers,

Richard

Nice seats made with the Pb-foil! I should take a look for comparison with the kitsī ones.
I bet, the whole interior is only "rudimantary" and simplified in detail.
But a nice vehicle itīs already!

Excellent build article, Richard! Great work on the DML BMP... I run the other way from old kits, but you achieved very good results. Funny how you build a whole kit just to have MAZ-cargo! Your photos of the MAZ build are very nice and with the arrival of Armory's MAZ tires is about all the motivation I need to bring my tractor version to the front of the line... in fact I've added this to the favorites so I can find this article quickly! Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing! - James

Hi Richard!

Good job on the Cabine. I used for the carpet Evergreen V-Groove 2025 025" Spacing. If you want I can send you a piece! Good job on the other parts. To what extend are you going to scratch the other details?

I think the wooden beams are a very interesting addition! That way you can also place various bits and ends on the trailer. It worked for me!

Can't wait on your next update

Thank you Soeren.

Yes you're right, the cab details are rudimentary and need upgrade

Thanks Jurjen. Well you know, I think the floor will be ok this way, cos it'll be saturated with mud and footprints. Thanks for your proposal anyway. I'll do less scratchbuilding in the outside because it sticks much more to reality than the inside cab. I also think the wood beams are a great addition, but dunno if Finland MAZ had'em ?

I felt like my first attempt at creating a pine tree was half a failure... So here is a second attempt, and I am much more pleased with the result

Comparison between first and second test...

Richard

Hi,

Thanks Phil for your nice comments.

Here are pics from the diorama layout test

80x40 cm was definetely too wide so I decided to get back to a most shelf-suitable 65x35 (yep, still centimeters...).

Two figs I may put in the foreground

Hi,

Thanks Martyn, thanks Jurjen.

Jurjen, the part you have colored red would mean I'd have to remove 10 cm to the length (or depth) of the diorama. It would switch the road to a "one way" only, while I thought about a two ways road.

But your idea is good in that way ( ) that it would make the dio more easily fitting my shelves or display case. And why a two ways road if one of them ways is empty...

Good idea indeed, I'll think of it, plus it really is doable.

Cheers,

Richard
