So what kind of base for the thing?

Only thing I might say and not a bad thing is try Vallejo Periscope from the Panzer Aces range on the periscopes looks good but if you already did it then forget that then.

the base will be a german village with an abandoned 8.8cm Pak 43, somewhen late april 1945

for the periscope, I used some vallejo color plus varnish
but the result is much more realistic - I think - in real than on the pictures
difficult to capture the depth of something which is glossy

What did you use for the weathering?

first the texture on the lower hull is a "home made" mixture : sawdust, sand, oakum, raw umber pigments and diluted with white glue and water
then the dust on the hull side is Tamiya flat earth airbrushed with 95% rubbing alcohol, adding NATO brown for lower hull
pigments ( flath earth, light earth and dark earth ) to finish the lower hull and raw umber pastel powder for the upper hull and the turret

And then did you let it run down and let it dry?

Blend downward with a soft flat brush soaked with turpentine, tamiya enamel thinner, lighter fuel, etc ..., indeed any thinner for oil paints will be the job

Tks for the comment on the model

Indeed regular paints won't achieve the same result, they are too "thin" and would be almost totally wiped out when blending

This is great - just like your war pic. Will look forward to the dio also. Did you apply your chunky mud mixture 1.dabbed by brush, 2.flicked by brush, or 3.blown by airbrush, or 4.?. It came out realistic Congrats

I would say both dabbed and flicked by brush to achieve different effects
I airbrushed also a coat of flat earth for the ligth dust on the hull sides ( Tamiya thinned with 95% of rubbing alcohol )

Here are the photos of the completed dio ... more than 1 year ago !

I like it!!! I recently got a us tank figures set. Should I paint them with a green or dark yellow coat and for their pants what color should I use? (I'm making a tamiya 1/48 m10 in Italy.)
