Good stuff happening here for sure.
Looking good Tony, those tracks really are easily modified aren't they?
Brad you have really done it up right.
Graham nice clean build there. IIRC Sicily is fairly temperate with rocks and dense soil. It is volcanic in origin so you should be ok with light dust.
After yet another hectic week I have tweaked Doris and I'm calling her finished. I added a water can and made a Marine Corps helmet from the spares supplied in the Tamiya kit. I took the bare steel helmet and added a cover made from tissue and diluted white glue. Painted, and with a fine wire chin strap, I feel it looks the part.
Enjoy!

Wayne,
I love the way you did the helmet. I never would of thought about the tissue concept. I used tissue for constructing a rock wall. Worked fantastic. Gave it the right texture and really holds the paint nice.
Did you construct the sandbags with epoxy sticks?

Mike I used Apoxie Sculpt, a two part putty that cleans up with water. I mixed it then rolled it out. After that I cut sections and molded them by hand, using a knife blade to scribe the stitching and what not. As a final touch I took an old T shirt and stretched the fabric over my finger. I then lightly pressed the putty leaving a faint texture.
That was the first time I tried that and I am pleased, no shocked, at the results!

Wayne,
Thanks for that info. I was also looking at the sand bags and wondered if there was some sort of texture on them. The t-shirt idea sounds good!
Also wondering if there is a set size to sand bags?

I know there is, but for the life of me I cannot remember what. I eyeballed the entire project based on photos.

@bradley: woah, that antenna base looks the part! you're not thinking of doing this commercialy ?
@michael: really wonderful finish, love the dust!! How'd you do it? Pigments with water?
and please, everyone, enlighten me: i always thougtht the kind of mantle on Michales M4A3 is an early one belonging to an M4 or M4A1. So this is...what? an M34whatnot gun mount and used on...? what a maze this shermy business....
@wayne: really wonderful work! this sandbag magic of yours will really look the part on an ETO Sherm!! next to a Gen. Patton roaring at the crew...
again: awesome work!
@jay: one thing i sometimes like to do with tool handles is paint them with PanzerAces New Wood, which is basically a bright orange-brown. Gives it a nice deep hardwood look. Or you paint the handles with Tamiya Buff and glaze them a few times with Clear Orange. It's really exagerated and more fitting to museum vehicle but, boy oh boy, does it contrast nicely with the OD!! And of course you can blend that down with weathering to your liking...

Leo,
I used Mig Pigment's "Thinner for Washes" to achieve the dusty look. I applied "Allied Green" pigment first then added the wash to let it spread out. I followed that up with a paint brush and pulled the wet surface in a direction I thought any rain water would flow to give a streaking effect. When this dried I went back over it to remove any areas of "Allied Green" that were too heavy. The "Thinner for Washes" spreads the pigment out nicely and when dry lets you remove some if needed. Not to be confused with the "Pigment Fixer"! I then followed that up with Europe Dust and Russian Earth.
I should mention that before I used the pigments I applied an overall oil wash, followed up with spot washes. I then applied oils to represent stains around the fuel intakes and some general oil spots on the back deck.
Overall I’m happy with the results. Next up I will tackle a muddy tank using pigments.
As to the mantel type I have no idea. The model is build straight from the Tamyia kit. I have no idea on different types.

Something else to go on my list of first, painting tracks. Can't believe I didn't make a total mess of these things.
Hope you approve of them.

I have more family issues I'm dealing with, so I haven't spent time looking through the posts from the last few days.
Hopefully I can catch up with all of the great progress in the next day or so,

Hey looking good Graham. Probably just me, but I would swoop the right turret side camouflage on a gradual curve instead of the right angle it takes before heading to the turret top?
Do you mean the waffle style WE 210 tracks? Double 'I' type... These were rubber block tracks, so treat 'em as you would T48 style.

thanks brad , yeh i thought that bit of camo looked wierd
lol i tryed to follow the instruction sheet but forgot to touch that bit up i try na remember to fix it up.
yeh not sure what ya call those tracksthey look like an H on its side , i also say some pics of kiwi shermans in italy they have same tracks but ni sand shields and form what ive read so far we had M4A2's so maybe we leased them from the us rather the brits as they had mostly mkIII's didnt they ? plus the firefly.
only reference i can find to the firefly is we had the VC not the 1C but theres not a lot of diff is there? shermans are new to me they aint my fav tank lol but im begining to like em there fairly easy to build so far.
cheers,
Graham

Hey Graham the KiwiShermans would have come from British stock/supply, as the US Army did not favour the diesel engined M4A2 in combat, and most all were LendLease to Britain and Russia. I won't say much more as I'm talking through my hat with Commonwealth anythings (the shame!) but the Firefly question I can probably answer... The IC is based on a hybrid hull, which had a curved cast font section and welded remainder, whereas the VC was an all welded square sided affair...I think

Hi Graham ...the NewZealanders were mostly equiped with the Sherman III (M4A2) , They did receive M4Hybrid and ShermanVC fireflies and they also got some ShermanIB's in 45..
I just noticed a couple of things on your sherman ..first is you forgot the vane sight on the right front corner of the turret and one of your rear lifting hooks has broken off or has dried crooked .
Love these Italian front camo schemes ,sure is different from plain ole OD ...Good job on that.
Keep the pictures coming, can't wait to see this one all weathered up!!

Ok, as I've never done a armor model I'm not sure what to do with my clear tail lights. Do I attach them before or after painting and is there a certain way to paint them? Need some advice as they don't tell me what color to paint and what not. Thanks and looking forward to hearing from you.
