Help to produce a proper T-54. This is distinct from the T-55 just to make sure information is not confusing, as it sometimes can be. Anyone can add information. I will try to post updated information at the top of this thread to make a quick, one stop information source, but it will be kept intentionally focused as quick help. Detailed discussion will still remain in the thread itself. All contributions welcome.

According to Pavlov/Pavlov the first prototype T-54 was manufactured by Jan 30 1945 at Nizny Tagil and shipped to Moscow. It was armed with a 100mm D-10T-K. The tank was demonstated and range tests were conducted.
Based upon these tests, 2 further prototypes were ordered to be produced by June 1945. Upon completion these prototypes underwent additional testing until Nov 1945.
After these tests. 2 further prototypes were ordered (third prototype). These prototypes were completed and subjected to a "1000km inter agency testing" and after these and other tests a fourth prototype was ordered and was built at factory #183 in February 1947.
The fourth prototype was also tested over 1000km and at this time the fifth and sixth prototypes were ordered and completed in April 1947. These 2 vehicles were the prototypes of the first production series of the T-54 Tank, what we often refer to as T-54-1 or T-54 mod. 1946. (Pavlov/Pavlov refers to it as T-54 mod 1947.
Hope that helps.

Anyone can determine how good the T-54 conversion sets are on this page? Just wondered:

I bought the set with the wheels...... The wheels appear to be copies of the DML wheels, my sample had some bubbles and warping but the general set was pretty nice. The instructions are pretty good too with color photos of the T54B at APG.

Turret is wrong becauseT-54 didn't have the anti radiation hatch. But is a mistake done by the modeller who has assembled the presentation model
anyway that was the correct one

hi
afaik that type of commanders hatch you pictured mauro, with the collar is not available aftermarket. Tamiyas is different and its not possible to convert to this type. Only option is to use the part from Esci kit and convert that as i have done for the type 69 conversion and T-54 model 49 turret i mastered.

Hi Mauro
No if you look closely, the bolted comb for the commanders hatch is totally different on the Esci kit , Also the part with the periscopes sits inside the comb part on the Tamiya kit. Best thing to do is compare the hatches i did and the Tamiya one...sorry no pics to hand. Will post some up later when i have a bit more time.

Hi Mauro
Thanks for taking time to upload pics, the esci part still requires a bit of work. It needs a little depth adding to the underside, and you need to make the rim around the top to depict the welded collar. I think i have a spare resin one from the master i made for Airedale castings if anyone wants it?..

No it isn't at all Mat.
T-54 is the Russian MBT antecedent to T-55
Someone says that actually we can consider t-54 and t-55 as a single tank developed during the time anyway I don't completely agree with this opinion
Anyway, I thought you've already known
What did you mean exactly?

This is why the post war T-54 is regarded by many as a different subject to the T-55.
The very first T-54's had a turret that was very different from the later T-54/55's, the turret is similar in appearance to the IS-2 Stalin.
Notice that the IS-3 Stalin adopted the 'upside down' frying pan turret shape, and then the T-54/55 also adopted the same sytle of turret.
You can clearly see a progression in design as you move from the war period to the post war period, the tank designers are trying to gain the largest possible turret ring while maintaining a small hull, the battle for space inside the turret is clearly underway, to gain room for larger Guns and also for crew space.
So the T-54 with the early turret tends to be regarded as a different subject, but the T-54 with the later turret (ie a turret that is in effect the same shape as the T-55) tends to get regarded as the same subject.
Plus a huge amount of crossover because T-54's were being upgraded to T-55's
Well
T-34/85 The grand grandFather
T-44 The grandfather
T-54 The father
T-55 T-62 the sons
T-72 The nephew
Joking aside in my opinion the T-54 is the first tank of the modern era. You have rightly said that turrets have become larger, but more of that we have to consider they have gradually become flatter. Hitting a flat broad (and fast) tank is far difficult than knocking down a higher tank such for exemple a Sherman. If you look at the moderns T-90, Leopard, M1 , you can notice that they still have the same design criteria
cheers
