so the stars have aligned and i have the next three days off with no plans whatsoever. so I thought it might be fun to knock out some soviet armour.
Tamiyas T-72 is a perfect candidate for this.
first off its a tamiya kit and fiddling around with fit issues is not going to be a problem, second its a relatively simple project. one colour and minimal decals. weathering will be light as the DDR version that I am building didnt see any action.
pics of the unstarted kit, lets see how far I can get.

besides there is nothing wrong with the kit tracks, and half the track run is hidden by the skirts.

I forgot about the side skirts. It's been a while since I built the Zvezda version.

Dylan I envy you
I can't find that kit at a reasonable price and I don't know why is so hard to find here in Italy
Anyway, as far as I know kit is nice but has some flaws. The worst is that the first stowage bin on the hull (to the left side of the driver) is hinged on the inner side while it should be hinged on the outer.
Furthermore the kit represents a rare Eastern German version. If you want to depict a tank of another country you'll have to look your references
I understand that you want to do a fast project, so you'll build the kit strictly OOB, but eventually those will be accuracy problems
Anyway I'm waiting for your next steps
cheers

I really don't know why Tamiya, doesn't produce a Russian version improving this tool It would be great and it would be a best seller.....Marketing policies are misterious indeed....
Hi Andreas. What about your T-72?

sometimes we need to remind ourselves that model building is a hobby and it is supposed to be fun.
I am a rivet counter by profession. I spent the better part of the last two days doing a detailed inspection on the engines of an airplane. meticulously scrutinizing all of the components, replacing filters, fuel nozzles, worn parts etc.
then I had to put it all back together and send it flying. i take my job very seriously, my hobby not so much.
there is a simple joy i get out of doing a three day build. if all goes well i should have a nice little T-72 sitting on the shelf next to my T-62 and t-55.
will it be a contest winner? nope most of my stuff is mediochre at best anyway.
I stopped building for contests many years ago, and now i just build em for myself.
I am not trying to be a jerk, i just want you guys to know where i am coming from.
I am going to be finishing it as a DDR version, so it will be somewhat accurate.
I am really surprised that tamiya hasn't done any other versions or trumpeter jumped on the bandwagon.
Mauro I think i got the kit from hobbyeasy
http://www.hobbyeasy.com/en/data/9687.html?t=1312020783
so tonights progress:
the lower hull bits are all glued on the turret has been assembled and the gun barrel glued together
not too crazy about how the turret went together. big seams need to be filled without destroying all that nice texture. even though they are mostly hidden under the stowage boxes, they still stand out.
classic tamiya kit, everything fits and is alligned. I love the way the barrel holders attach to the rear of the tank.

Dylan,
Looking forward to this one as I am thinking of picking one of these up as part of my goal to have a few modern armour kits to build.
Dave.

Nice work so far!!!
I can perfectly understand the need of a strictly OOB build...
It's very relaxing and calming...

Dylan- you've certainly got the right attitude about this hobby- its nice to do a quick OOB build with no fiddly bits- just build and paint! Good luck with it mate !

"Sometimes we need to remind ourselves that model building is a hobby and it is supposed to be fun."
Exactly, now if you really want to annoy the rivit counter brigade (and lets be honest, everyone should aim to achieve this at least once in their lives), do it as an Iraqi version, then just sit back and listen to them all scream about turrets.
Tamiya's T-72 builds into a fantastic model straight from the box, given a choice between an inaccurate kit that fits together well and has nice moulding, or an accurate kit that is made from cheap junk plastic that has wheels that dont even fit (Trumpeter take note), I shall take the inaccurate kit every time

Yes, is absolutely true...but I can't resist to correct accuracy flaws in my models . That's the reason why I can produce a few models par year...sometime that is a little bit frustrating but anyway this is "my way"...
Nice start Dylan, I'm sure you'll do a great paint job because i remember your latest "Russian" releases.According to the link which you give me, the kit costs 20,45 €...A bargain indeed, I don't know how will cost adding shipping cost
Matt, I've already seen your T-72 and in my opinion is outstanding indeed
Anyway i may to explain better my opinion about the kit. i think it has some accuracy problems but I didn't mean that is a "dog kit". Is an incredibly good model. A lot far better than for example some new italeri kit
Have a good job and happy modelling to everyone

I sit sort of in the middle, I love OOB builds, but I also like the accuracy stuff, I just dont like the accuracy stuff when it turns into blazing rows, like all the paint colour nonsense that has swamped the hobby these days.
I am glad you mentioned the storage box thing Spider, I didnt know that, shows how much I pay attention, lol.
And you should get one of these Tamiya T-72's and just build it OOB, you will have tons of fun, forget all the accuracy stuff, the top hull does not lend itself to modding much anyway due to its design.
Looking forward to seeing this get built in 3 days

Hello Mauro,
I totally have your point. I´m a rivet counter myself, who sometimes need a brake^^ my T-72 is on the "to do" pile but was hold for my SA-8 which is 100% ready now. Fotos to come tomorrow.
BEst regards,
Andreas

Well I, for one, disagree with that statement. And you do have the awards to prove otherwise...

I built one of these years ago. I did the NVA one also. I wanted to build an Iraqi one but they don't have the skirts fitted and the Tamiya kit comes with the skirts molded on, unfortunately. Someday I will build that Iraqi T-72, though. Verlinden makes a replacement upper hull that doesn't have the skirts. I might invest in some more aftermarket bits too. It'll be nice to see what I can do with it since I built my previous T-72 about six years ago and I believe, in all modesty, that my skills have improved since then.
Good luck, and have fun building your T-72.

Look forward to seeing your build!
Really wish I could do this, alas I have about 7 of the Tamiya T-72's, all with replacement turrets, new tracks, etch etc etc all of which wont get built for many years due to the effort required. The main thing is we build how WE want and have fun doing it.

Well...it would be almost impossible . I've tried but I really can't build strictly OOB
I' ve been waiting for a decent new tool of a T-72 for so long, that I think when it be produced I'll do at least a hundred of versions... But if I had the Tamiya kit I'd convert in a JNA M-84...
Otherwise I'd like to reproduce one of them wearing the "psychedelic" Slovac temporary summer scheme...

just a quick update for now. i sanded the turret and restored some of the cast texture. most of this is hidden by some large stowage boxes, but i might have to revisit the seams when i get the boxes on.
the turret seams are the only fault i can find with this kit so far
I like to prime my kits with black , so i did the lower hull while i was checking the seams on the turret
Does anyone have a good colour match for the green the DDR would have used for this tank. tha tamiya instructions say to use Olive drab2 but that only in a spray can. the valejo air mix looks too much like NATO green for me.
I would like to stay with acrylics if i can

upper hull is assembled
first a mock up with the barrels in place
the P.E. and vinyl screens in place. I had to paint the areas under the screens black so i just carried on with the rest of the hull until the cup ran ourt
plumbing on the barrels has begun.
and after some harsh language its all in place
I found a figure i had started from the Zvezda T-72, I think i will stick him in the drivers hatch. after i add the arms of course

thanks Andreas
I finished off the turret while watching the Formula one race. a good way to spend a sunday morning I think.
I may have to do some tweaks to the smoke dischargers, there are some seams on the end caps that are visable in the photos (clearly better lighting is needed where i sit) and a couple of other touch ups then its on to paint.

Looking Good
I had a nightmare with exactly the same two things you did, the turret joint (which is very badly done by Tamiya) and those pesky fuel drum lines that have a metal coil wrapped round them.
If you have time add a little bit of wiring to smoke dischargers, I know its OOB but the wires look nice

Go go do! Only a day left! Haha, just kidding- but this is coming together real well. Think I'm going to have to go hunting for this kit and OOB it myself.
