The thermal sleeve of any tank can be removed. Usually for maintenance and cleaning. They would most likely be reinstalled afterwards though especially if going into action. They only way I would see one not having one is if it was seriously damaged somehow and a replacement could not be immidiately aquired.

Hi Eric,

If you build an M from Afghanistan, Chechnya or Ossetsia you should be OK without it. It was probably installed as they left the factory but there are pictures around of M's without the thermal sleeve in all mentioned theaters. Perhaps they were removed becourse they were damaged? Perhaps the the risk of damaging them were considered to great contra the added accuracy (after all the Russians didn't expect to fight other tanks in A-stan)?
