Does that mean she never reads any of your posts?

You're right Jeff. I've had a couple of close calls, but I manage to change tabs or drop out of the thread just in time. I like living on the edge mate !!

I guess that was a bad place to practice drifting...

Since the accident was a driver-error I bet he is having a bad day, the tank was brand new, poor sod.

Hang on the tank has gone backwards off the bridge, I'm wondering if he forgot to engage "forward" before he stomped the pedal to the metal ?

Me too. Usually when this happens to a tank someone is fatally wounded; most likely the turret crew. I hope these guys got lucky

As for how turrets are attached; Gravity does a fantastic job provided the thing is right way up. I've seen a picture of a Churchill that did the same thing. The turret crew did not survive that one

Well turret seems to be the first thing that breaks away when a tank is hit or when it has an accident....

but of course it doesn't mean that the turret isn't attached to the hull

Hi all
Im by no means close to being considered an expert but a couple of years a go two M1s Managed to clip each others turrets as they passed each other whils bounding in a Battle run the end result was that one of the tanks had the retaining Mechanism broken and the other had Its bustle rack ripped off I spoke to the crews and that is what they told me so I guess they would have to be attached in some form as it woul cause damage whilst driving cross country and the turret bouncing arond.
As I said Im no expert Interesting thought though.
Cheers cuny12

The turret weighs 22 tonnes, there isn't a lot that can make that bounce !

I am reminded of the stories about the turret bolt fixes after roll overs resulted in killing gunners in M1117 ASV's. Private First Class Sammie E. Phillips of Vine Grove, Hardin County, was killed on Monday, September 10, 2007 when his vehicle overturned while conducting a traffic control mission on a highway near Rustamiyah, Iraq. Phillips, 19, was assigned to Battery B, 2nd Battalion, 138th Field Artillery, based in Carlisle, Ky. Seems like they added more bolts to keep the turret together. I guess it depends on not only the type of vehicle, but also the specific model and build to determine how well the "top is screwed on". These are great photos! Pls send more pix of girls. Happy modeling to all.

If we have some folks who were in Gulf War I, I believe they can explain and show how shots on Russian tanks usually result in turret blow offs. I also recall they achieved these results using Multi Purpose Anti Tank (MPAT) 120mm rounds vice the Sabot type. Seems to me I have also seen photos of T-34 with the same end result. If someone has more knowledge on the subject, I would be most interested in hearing about their experiences.

Getting back to the story, no one was seriously injured! I wonder how much 70 million rubles are, that is what the tank is worth... The writer was wondering how much the taxpayers will have to pay to fix this one!

Today's exchange rate: 70 Russian rubles = 2.21333 U.S. dollars! Whoa thats a lot of money!! How much does an Abrams cost? Is it that much?

The T-90A from the 19 Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade caught in a traffic accident caused by the driver. The crew was injured, but survived, a tank, no doubt, will be repaired, but that's how much this repair would cost the taxpayers?

Good to hear the crew is well! Thanks for the info. A tank can be repaired, like a car, or a new one can be bought, but not a human live.

Russian tanks tend to use an autoloader which means that the shells have to be stored below the turret so that they can be picked up by the mechanism.

An additional problem is that they also lack sufficient fire supression equipment.

Any penetration into the hull means an external explosion which blows off the turret.

We didn't have MPAT rounds just HEAT and SABOT back in the GW1. But yes on the blow off, usually with SABOT rounds. The force of the impact on such a small concentrated area usually caused a vacuum that forced air rapidly in to the hull and then needed some place to go, usually up. Although there were stories of crews being sucked through the exit hole, which was usually the size of a half dollar. . .

Yes, and the turrets can 'fly' quite some distance as well:

From Georgia 2008. Seems the turret came through the roof (although I don't think thats actually the case, it still flew some distance)

Anyway guys there could be something worse than falling down from a bridge driving a tank...

I REALLY can't imagine how they manage to recover the tank...

(pic taken during the second Chechen war if I remember in a right way)

That's a great photo Rob, Thanks a lot!
